WELL COMPLETION
WC is the “hardware” of the outflow system & final stage of a drilled well.

The design philosophy of WC is to “Maximize Profitability”.

– by maximizing well hydrocarbon recovery.
– by considering the full hydrocarbon resource life cycle.

Quality concepts for WC is;

“A Quality Well is a well which contributes, over its life cycle,

maximum monetary value, without compromising safety &
environmental standards”

WELL COMPLETION

1. Conventional Completion
2. Mono-bore Completion
“Completion with fullbore access across the pay zone without diameter
restrictions”.

CONVENTIONAL Same tubing ID Mono-bore

WRSV Use full bore slimline tubing run SSSV

TRSV
SSD Omit, use CT well servicing
Minimize annular “waste” (swedge ▼or run Liner)

Well COMPLETION
It is the hardware of the outflow system.

There many different types & functions of downhole accessories installed in a

the outflow system depending on the type of a well.

It is essentially important to understand these accessories prior doing Well

Intervention operations.

8
TUBING
Medium to convey well fluids from wellbore to surface or vise versa.
• Prevent well effluents expose to casing.
• API & Premium connections
API: Tapered thread & rely on thread compound to effect seal
Premium: Metal-to-Metal seal
• Tubing = Tubular range from 2⅜” to 4½”
• Casing = Tubular range from >5”

Tubing selection governed by:

• Well peak production rate
• Well depth
• Use of WL tools
• Pressure & temperature
• Annulus differential pressure etc

LANDING NIPPLE
Short tubular with 3 features to accommodate retrievable FCD;

Shoulder
Polished Seal Bores
Profiles or locking Grooves
SV NIPPLE

All landing nipples is to receive

Flow control devices except

The last one is to isolate reservoir

From the lowest possible point

DHSV
1. PASSV ( Pressure Activated Subsurface control Safety Valve )
- Ambient pressure
- Differential pressure
2- SCSSV ( Surface Control Subsurface Safety Valve )
- WRSV ( Wire line Retrievable Safety Valve )
- TRSV ( Tubing Retrievable Safety Valve )
All works by Pressure

Apply pressure from above to reopen Always monitor gauge when you are in hole
( PASSV) differential pressure type Use fluid compatible with location supply

2- CERCULATING DEVICE

WELL INTERVENTIONS COURSE HANDOUTS 19

SLIDING SIDE DOOR
Designed to provide communication for:
• Circulation for under-balanced fluid
• Killing purposes
• Provide selective zone productions

Features:
• Nipple profiles
• Polished seal bores
• Inner sleeve with packings.
• Equalizing ports.

SSD Type:
• Jar up to open
• Jar down to open
• Larger flow ports
Can be install several number in one
tubing string
1- Used for communication

2- Equalize pressure before opening

3- Be sure it is fully open

4- Set one joint above packer for

communication/circulation or between packers
for production
5- all SSD in the well has to jar in one direction

21
SIDE POCKET MANDREL
Originally designed for gas lift system but it also
used for communication device.
Feature:
• Full tubing bore
• Orientating sleeve GLV DV
• Discriminator
• 1” or 1½” valve receptacle

Valve Type:
• Dummy Valve (DV)
• Gas Lift Valve (GLV)
• Chemical Injection Valve (CIV)
• Circulation Valve (CV)
• Differential kill valve
ANNULUS SAFETY VALVE

23
3- ISOLATION DEVICE

WELL INTERVENTIONS COURSE HANDOUTS 24

What is a packer?

A tool, when set, seals the annular area

between two strings of pipe or a string of pipe
and the open hole

Production flow is also allowed through the

packer

Tubing

Packer

Casing 55
Production Packers
Function:
The Production Packer isolates Annulus between
Tubing and Casing and the ‘foot’ of the well. This is
to stop reservoir fluids from flowing up the full
length of casing and affecting/corroding it.

Location:
It is generally placed close to the bottom of the
tubing, and a short distance above the production Tubing
zone.
OD
There are three major types of production Packer
packers:
Casing
• Permanent
• Retrievable – Mechanical or Hydraulic
• Permanent/Retrievable
3-Isolation Device
PRODUCTION PACKER

Permanent Retrievable
27
PERMANENT PACKER
1- Resist high pressure /high temperature

2- Integral part of the casing once it is set and retrieved by milling only

3- Set hydraulically or electrically

4- Shear studs will prevent running tool from being released before complete set

5- Tail pipe excess weight will prevent correct setting

28
RETRIEVABLE PACKER
1- Run with Completion
2- Set hydraulically by applying pressure inside tubing or Mechanically by rotation
3- Retrieved by over pull and shearing release pins
4- Set in tension or compression
5- Set by shearing setting pins
