Messenger

Construction Specification

The messenger serves as the support member for a ASTM B415

Spacer Cable System. In addition, the messenger provides ASTM B416
lightning protection for the conductors and neutral capacity
for the circuit. Two standard constructions of messenger
are available: AWA (Alumoweld-Aluminum) messengers
and Alumoweld (AW) messengers. The strands used to
manufacture these types of messengers are either Aluminum 1350-H19
Clad steel wires (AW) or a combination of Aluminum Clad
steel wires and 1350-H19 Aluminum wires, (AWA).

Application

The messenger is used to support the Spacer Cable System. clad steel
Installation of the messenger at the proper tension will result in a
system that has a high degree of reliability. The messenger’s
strength will help protect the system from falling trees and
branches as well as continue to support the cable during high
wind loads and icing conditions. When properly installed and
grounded, the messenger provides both neutral capacity and
lightning protection for the total cable system.
