UNIT 1 – DIFFERENT LIVES

VOCABULARY
1. We’ll start working with vocabulary, in this case, compound nouns. A compound is a noun that is made up of
2 or more words. Most compound nouns in english are formed by nouns modified by other nouns or
adjectives. For example, the words tooth and paste are two words on their own, but if you put them
together, they make up an entirely different word, toothpaste. Watch this video if you want to know a Little
bit more about them: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tQAxqIqtjcU

2. Take a look at exercise 1 (students’ book, page 10) and match the words with their image. If there is a Word
that you need to look up, search the definition here: https://www.dictionary.com/

3. Once you have matched the words to their image, classify them according to its meaning into categories in
exercise 2. In exercise 3, read the prompts and decide which compound noun they refer to.

READING
Do the exercises on the students’ book, on page 11 and on the activity book, page 9. Remember to write the answers
to all the questions on your sheet of paper or file. As regards the Reading in the activity book “A New Life Down
Under”, DOWN UNDER is a way to call the country of Australia.

GRAMMAR
past simple & past continuous
Look at the chart to remember when to use past simple and past continuous.

Then, you can start working on the activities in the students’ book. You can go to page 12 and do exercises 1, 2, 3, 4
and 5. Remember to devote more time to personal questions, like the ones on exercise 5. In the activity book, do all
the exercises on page 10. After you’re done with that, we’ll work with the booklet. We’ll use pages 2 and 3.

Listen to this to relax a little, it’s from one of my favorite movies:

phrasal verbs

phrasal verbs are idiomatic phrases consisting of a verb and another element, typically either an adverb, as
in break down, or a preposition, for example see to, or a combination of both, such as look down on. This is
a link to a phrasal verb dictionary: http://elibrary.bsu.az/books_250/N_233.pdf

You can read the text on the students’ book, on page 13 and do the exercises that you have there. After
you have completed those exercises, work on the activity book, page 11.

Past simple habits: used to, be used, get used to

There are certain expressions that we use to refer to habits or things we did in the past, like used to. When
we use used to in this way, it always followed by a verb in the infinitive. For example:

When I was a kid, I used to watch cartoons on Nickelodeon.

Other expressions with used to, when preceded by the verb to be or the verb get don’t refer to past habits
but to things and actions we are or are getting accostumed to. These expressions are always followed by a
gerund, that is, a verb with –ING.

Now, with the quarantine, we are getting used to having clases online.

I work out frequently, so I’m used to running 5km a day.

With that information, you can do page 15, exercise 1,2 and 3 in the students’ book and page 13 in the
activity book. Later on, you can do all the exercises in page 4 in the booklet.
