Sampling theorem, Quantization, Encoding, Pulse code modulation, Adaptive pulse code
modulation, and Differential pulse code modulation.

Numerical Problems:

Q.1 In a binary PCM system, the output signal-to-quantization noise ratio is to held to a
minimum of 40 dB. Determine the number of required levels and find the corresponding output
signal-to-quantization-noise ratio.

Q.2 State the sampling theorem and prove it using properties of Fourier transform. Draw the
spectrum of sampled signal for three different cases fs< 2fm, fs=2fm and fs>2fm, where fs is
sampling frequency and fm is maximum frequency component present in the message signal.

Q.3 A signal ( ) = 200 + 2 320 is ideally sampled at fs= 250 Hz, what
frequency components will appear in the output?

Q.4 Determine the Nyquist sampling rate and the Nyquist sampling interval for the signals.

(a) sinc (100πt)

(b) sinc2 (100πt)

(c) sinc (100πt)+ sinc(50πt)

Q.5 A signal g(t) = sinc2 (5πt) is sampled at the rate of (a) 5 Hz (b) 10 Hz (c) 20 Hz. For each of
these three cases

(a) Sketch the sampled signal

(b) Sketch the spectrum of the sampled signal.
