National Film Award for Best Direction

The National Film Award for Best Direction is an honour


presented annually at India's National Film Awards ceremony by
National Film Award for Best
the Directorate of Film Festivals (DFF), an organisation set up by Direction
the Indian Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.[1] Since Awarded Excellence in cinematic
1967, the award is given by a national panel appointed annually for direction achievement
by the DFF to a director for their work within Indian cinema.[1] It Sponsored Directorate of Film
is presented by the President of India at a ceremony held in New

The winner is given a "Swarna Kamal" (Golden Lotus) certificate called direction (1967–1976)
and a cash prize of ₹2.5 lakh (US$3,500).[a][7] Including ties and Reward(s) Swarna Kamal (Golden
repeat winners, the DFF has presented a total of 52 Best Direction

awards to 33 different directors. Although Indian cinema
produces films in more than 20 languages,[1] the performances of ₹ 2,50,000
films that have won awards are of nine languages: Bengali (16 First 1967
awards), Malayalam (13 awards), Hindi (10 awards), Tamil (4 awarded
awards), English (3 awards), Kannada (2 awards), Assamese,
Panjabi and Marathi (1 each). Last 2018

The first recipient was Satyajit Ray, who was honoured at the

15th National Film Awards for directing the Bengali film

Chiriyakhana (1967).[8] As of 2017, Satyajit Ray is the most
winner
frequent recipient, with six wins.[9] Gopalakrishnan won the
award for his debut Malayalam film Swayamvaram (1972).[10] Highlights
Mrinal Sen has been awarded four times. He is also the only Total 53
recipient to win the award for directing films in two different awarded
languages: Bengali and Hindi.[11] At the 19th National Film
Awards, Girish Karnad and B.V. Karanth shared the award for First Satyajit Ray
co-directing the Kannada film Vamsha Vriksha (1972).[12] The winner
