Title:

Domestic Solid Waste Research

Student Name:

Diana Estefanía Once Bravo

Teacher:
Eng. Héctor Apolo

Guayaquil, Ecuador
June, 2019
2019-2020
Context
The city that we are going to study is:

GUAYAQUIL

Period of the study is:

From Wednesday 19 of June to Saturday 23 of June

Process
1) Collect data of the biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste

Daily percentage of biodegradable waste and non-biodegradable generated in

my house

Days of study Kilograms Kilograms Total

Biodegradable non-

Biodegradable
Wednesday 19 1.3 0.3 1.6

Thursday 20 1.1 0.4 1.5

Friday 21 1.0 0.5 1.5

Saturday 22 0.9 0.4 1.3

Sunday 23 1.2 0.9 2.1

Figure 1. the average of biodegradable and non-

biodegradable wastes during the five days.
Firstly, make a daily study.

The next graphs show in percentage the amount and types of waste per day
2) Analyse the waste per person at your home in Kg (Kilograms)

Analysis per member of the family

Daily production of
Kilograms Kilograms non-
Days of study Total waste per member of the
Biodegradable Biodegradable
family

Wednesday 19 1.3 0.3 1.6 kg

0.8
per person
Thursday 20 1.1 0.4 1.5 kg
0.75
per person
Friday 21 1.0 0.5 1.5 kg
0.75
per person
Saturday 22 0.9 0.4 1.3 kg
0.65
per person
Sunday 23 1.2 0.9 2.1 kg
1.05
per person

Results:

Total of members∈my family=2 people

total amount of garbage (average)=1.6 kilograms

1.6 kilograms kg
daily generation of waste per person ( Average)= =0.8
2 people per person

3) Look for a solution by taking actions in order to reduce the amount or

quantity of garbage generated

 Avoid using or buying plastic bottles of water on one use,

instead promote and use thermos of water that have mora

than thirty uses.

 Donate some clothes that you don´t use and they are in a

good condition that maybe are going to finish

in the garbage is better to give it to somebody that really need this.

(second hand items)

 Reduce buying the amount of things that have plastic packaging, is

better to buy the fruits and vegetables with their own natural package

(rind) than buying an orange in a supermarket with a plastic cover.

[ CITATION Bai02 \l 12298 ]

 As students we are going to use a lot of papers, try to use it carefully.

Use the both side of a sheet of paper and

minimize the quantity of paper that you use to

copy or print by printing as well in the both sides

of the paper.

 At the parties or any other kind of meeting employing plates of

expanded polystyrene because this material has no way to be recycle,

is only one use and is non-

biodegradable. This material is founded

inside of many different kinds of fishes.

[ CITATION Jin06 \l 12298 ]

 Make a list before going to the supermarket in order to buy the exact

amount of food that is better than later on have a food waste. Because

sometimes we have a lot of food in our fridge and we forget about the

expiration date. That is why we need to be carefully and conscious

about the relation between what we eat and what we buy.[ CITATION

Vis06 \l 12298 ]

4) Make a relation between the garbage that you generate with Guayaquil

2500000 x 0.8=2000000

Actually, Guayaquil is producing 4200 tons of garbage that data in kilograms

is equal to 3810176 kilograms. If we compare the possibility that every

single person in Guayaquil had the same 0.8 kilograms of waste, as a result

we are going to have 2000000 kilograms of waste it would be better for the

planet because there we can find a huge gap or difference between those

values 3810176-2000000= 1810176 kilograms. As a result, there would be

1810176 kilograms that are not going to be in the ecosystem that will help to

have a better place to live. Finally, is our decision to change our minds and

start making the difference in our neighbourhood with little action that later

on could change the entire world.
