(b) What is meant by abnormal combustion? Explain the phenomena of knock in SI engine.
(c) Write short note on-
(i) Octane no.
(ii) Cetane no.

Q.3:- Attempt all:- 3*2=6

(a) A diesel engine has a compression ratio of 20 and cut off takes place at 5% of the stroke.
Find the air standard efficiency. Assume (γ = 1.4)
(b) With a neat sketch explain the working principle of a simple carburetor.

Q.4:- Attempt any one:- 6*1=6

(a) Compare Otto and diesel cycle for the-
(i) Same compression ratio and heat input
(ii) Same max. Pressure and heat input
(b) What are the requirements of an ideal IC engine fuel? What do you understand by the
term “Dopes”? Name some of the additives used for SI and CI engine fuels.

Q.5:- Attempt any one:- 6*1=6

(a) An engine working on dual cycle uses a compression ratio of 14. The intake pressure
and temperature are 1 bar and 330K. The pressure ratio at constt. volume is 1.4. The heat
supplied during constt. Pressure process is twice that of the constt. Volume process.
Determine pressure and temperature at salient points, the % cut off ratio, heat supplied,
heat rejected, work done and air standard efficiency per kg of air.
(b) Explain with the help of neat sketch operation of a carburetor having starting, idling
and main metering system.
