FALSE CEILING
A false ceiling is a ceiling made beneath the main ceiling of the room or building.

• In other words, it is a second layer of roof suspended from the main roof with
the help of metal or wooden frame.
• It is also known as dropped ceiling & has multiple advantages.
• It improves the aesthetics of the room.
• False ceiling is provided to keep the room cool during summer and warm in
winter.
• It is also provided to conceal the ugly mesh of electrical wires, light fixtures, air-
conditioning ducts and other fixtures.

STANDARDS OF FALSE CEILING IN INDIA-
❖ Standard Height : 9 feet

❖ Installation process : The installation of false ceiling in India is based on 4 levels-

LEVELLING - Firstly all required measurements for ceiling is taken & leveling is done with
water because most of the times the slabs are not leveled. The ceiling needs to be in one level
for correct installation of false ceiling.

MARKING - Marking is done on ceiling at a distance of 4 feet each & also in side walls at
the height where the false ceiling will be suspended below the original ceiling.
Hooks are metal ceiling angle strip are fixed to the ceiling. These fittings become the chief
support points of false ceiling.

FRAMING - For framing, perimeter channels are fitted on the walls at a height where
false ceiling will be suspended. The perimeter channels and free end of hooks are connected
with other channels. Ceiling sections are then fitted to the main foundation forming much
précised framing that enables attaching plasterboard or any other material used for false
ceiling.

WIRING - Once the framing for is complete, wiring for lights, fan and other
necessary electrical work is completed.
Then false ceiling is given a smooth finish with skimming plaster.
• Once the finishing process is over, electricians are called to install light fittings, do final
wiring and other electrical work.
• The ceiling is now ready to be painted.

❖ Time taken to do False Ceiling:

A basic rectangular false ceiling will take a week’s time to be ready. While to have a Curvature
or any other design false ceiling will takes 10-12 days time.

CASE STUDY-
Project | Heartland Acoustics & Interiors
Location | Austin, TX
Architect | KDS Architecture
Product | DesignFlex™ Ceiling Systems

THE CHALLENGE:
When Heartland Acoustics & Interiors decided to open
an office in Austin, TX, company management also
decided they wanted it to reflect a variety of spaces
typically found in commercial environments and to
highlight products that were well suited to meet the
acoustical challenges of each space.
As Heartland President, Jason Gordon, explains, “Our
intent was to
create a variety of spaces including exposed structure,
open plan, and private office in order to showcase
effective acoustical solutions in each type of space. We
believe there’s a great deal of value in it for clients
because they can see a real installation instead of just a
photo and a sample.”
THE SOLUTION:
To accomplish its goal in the facility’s operations office and the main conference room, two
different patterns of DesignFlex™ Ceiling Systems from Armstrong Ceilings were installed.
DesignFlex ceilings provide the opportunity to mix and match different sizes, shapes, colors,
and materials to create a signature ceiling, all available to ship in three weeks.
The operations office showcases a trio of Calla®, Lyra® PB, and MetalWorks™ DesignFlex
Shapes ceiling panels featuring the firm's coporate colors of blue, grey, and white. Gordon
explains that they chose the ceiling design from the dozens of predesigned patterns
available in the Armstrong online DesignFlex Shapes Pattern Gallery, which provides all
required details for installation – from panels and suspension systems to trims and
accessories. Triangular-shaped light fixtures from Axis Lighting and triangular-shaped air
diffusers from Price® Industries are also incorporated into the ceiling. Both are Integrated
Solution Partners with Armstrong Ceilings, that develop compatible fixtures and accessories
pre-qualified for fit and finish to seamlessly integrate with DesignFlex Ceiling Systems.
The DesignFlex ceiling in the firm’s conference room has a totally different visual, featuring
bright, white panels for high light reflectance. “Our goal here was to show the possibilities of
using panels outside of traditional 2' x 2' and 2' x 4' sizes,” Gordon states. “As a result, we
installed panels that were much more linear." To support the need for privacy and
confidentiality, high NRC ceiling panels were installed to achieve excellent sound absorption .
