Preaching Series: “MORE THAN A FEELING––Mental and Emotional Health”

As we have been learning what the school year will look like this year, we all have a lot of feelings.
Whether you are a teacher, a parent/guardian, an administrator, a paraprofessional, a support staff
member, a bus driver, or more than one of these, preparing for this school year is a challenge. Here
are some ways we can manage our feelings and contribute to the mental and emotional health of
our families and communities:
Rev.
Mary Suomala Folkerds ª Acknowledge how you feel. If you are feeling

frustrated, anxious, or overwhelmed, that is okay!
Know that everyone else is feeling some stress and
that everyone is doing the best they can.
ª Give some grace. This pandemic is new for all of us.
Our school leaders are trying to create the best plan
with the best information they have. There are no
perfect solutions.
ª Offer a kind word. Everyone is managing new
challenges this year. There will be wrinkles to iron
Rev. Taylor Wilson
Pastor of out as the school year begins. As you deal with these,
Mission Development remember to say, “thank you.” Your encouragement
might make a big difference!
ª Pray. Pray for students, parents, guardians, administrators, teachers, paraprofessionals,
lunchroom workers, custodians, librarians, support staff, and bus drivers. Pray that God would
give them strength, support, and creativity. Pray for peace for their anxious hearts.

Faithfully,

“Make a joyful noise to the Lord … It is He that made us, and we are his.” (Psalm 100:1 and 3)
h We end our 6-week sermon series “More Than a Feeling” with the emotion of JOY.
We experience joy when we are honest about all our emotions. Brené Brown says,
“We cannot selectively numb emotions; when we numb the painful emotions, we
also numb the positive emotions.” Do you think this is true?
h This Psalm invites us to experience joy, but the most common kind of Psalm (of all
150 Psalms in the Old Testament) is of complaint. People in the Bible were honest
with how they were feeling. Being honest and sharing their complaints with God
helped people honestly experience the joy of God’s presence.
