Young Modulus

Apparatus:
 Wire
 Masses
 Meter rule
 Weighing balancer
 Micrometer screwguage
Independent variable:
Mass added
Dependent variable:
Extension
Procedure:
 Measure the diameter of the wire using micrometer screwguage.
 Measure the masses using weighing balancer.
 Use wooden blocks to clamp the wire at one end of the table and fit
G clamp on the other end of the table.
 Pass the wire over the G clamp and attach a marker on the wire. Use the
marker to measure the initial length of the wire.
 Add masses to the other end of the wire and use meter rule to measure
the extension of the wire.
 Note the reading for each mass added.
 Repeat using different masses and find the corresponding extension.
Data analysis:
stress
Young modulus=
strain
force
Stress=
area of the cross−section
extension
strain=
initial length

 Calculate the area of the cross section using π r 2.

 Extension = final length – initial length.
 Plot the graph of stress against strain.
 the gradient of the graph would be equal to Young modulus.
Improvement:
 Repeat and find average.
 Use marker to measure the length and place the meter rule parallel to the
eyes while measuring the length.
 Use longer and thinner wire.
