‘' Basic Chemistry Vocabulary

Matter
A substance that has mass and occupies space.

Substance
Matter that has the same composition and properties through

Element
Any substance that cannot be broken down into simpler substances. Identified by
its symbol and its atomic number.

Atomic Number
Is equal to the number of protons found in the nucleus.

Mass Nuclear
Number of protons and neutrons (nucleons) in the nucleus of an atom

Isotope
Atoms of the same element with the same atomic number but with different
numbers of neutrons

Atomic Mass
The atomic mass may be considered to be the total mass of protons, neutrons and
electrons in a single atom.

Ion
Atom that has a positive or negative charge

Liquid
Composed of molecules that move freely among themselves but do not tend to
separate like those of gases

Mass
The amount of matter an object has; how much "stuff" makes up that object

Compound
Two or more elements joined by chemical bonds; properties are unrelated to the
properties of its components; components can only be separated by a chemical
change; e.g., water, carbon dioxide

Mixture
Physical combination of two or more substances; properties are related to the
properties of its component substances; components can be separated by a
physical change; e.g., air, saltwater, 14-K gold
Atom
Smallest unit of an element that still retains the properties of that element consist of
three subatomic particles.

Proton
A subatomic particle that has a positive charge (+1) and that is found in the
nucleus of an atom

Neutron
A subatomic particle that has no charge and that is found in the nucleus of an atom

Electron
A subatomic elementary particle that has a negative charge (-1); located outside
the atomic nucleus

Nucleus
The relatively small, dense central core of an atom that contains protons and
neutrons

Gas
A substance possessing perfect molecular mobility and the property of indefinite
expansion, as opposed
