FabriCAD
Getting Started

Section 1

1.1 Introduction

FabriCAD is an automated steel detailing program that uses

Windows 95/NT technology to lead the Detailer from 3D model generation
to finished detail drawings and output reports.

The Overview section of this manual describes the steps that

are necessary to setup and create a structure in a 3D model, so
that the resulting reports and drawings will reflect the design
documents.

The Reference section explains the use of each menu command,

dialog box and window.

The first principle you need to be familiar with is the concept of

Page Control. When Page Control is switched on, a tabbed
menu appears along the left side of the screen as a guide to the
process of creating a structure. You should start from the top
of the menu to define setups and grids and gradually work
down to input elements and add member accessories.

1.4 Running the Program

From the Windows START menu, click on PROGRAM and select

FabriCAD. If FabriCAD is installed with STAAD/Pro, select the
appropriate STAAD directory, then select FabriCAD.

Btrieve database management software is necessary to run

FabriCAD. The Microkernel Database Engine will load
automatically as needed and will run in the backround.

Once you start the application, you can begin to setup a new
job or load an existing job. After starting FabriCAD, the
default job name is listed as Untitled1. Use the SAVE button to
enter a job name before progressing too far. The SAVE icon is
the third icon from the left, representing the shape of a floppy
disk.

Any information that is entered with the job name Untitled, will
be lost if the program closes unexpectedly. You can also save
the project by selecting:
File / Save As
Verify the correct project name in the File Name box,
Click on SAVE

New project names will be saved to the Fabricad directory with

the extension FAB.
Example: Job name rei0001 will be saved as rei001.fab

Section 1 7

The second time you detail a job, you will get dialog box that
asks if you want to freeze the job. Freezing a job lets you re-
process a job as many times as you like without having to
worry about re-plotting all of your sheets. This is particularly
useful when you have made revisions, causing some members
to be moved around on the plotted sheets.
Click No, since there have not been any drawings plotted that
need to be saved.

A dialog box will appear before futher processing continues.

Any obvious errors will be noted, allowing you to Cancel this
step to return and correct any problems noted. A summary of
members appears which can also be helpful in determining if
members where entered properly.
Click Continue.

When processing is complete, the reports, plots and CNC

interface files will be available.

We suggest making a copy of this project before revising the

data, so the original data will not be altered.

2.1 Setups

The most efficient method of creating a new job involves the

use of predefining the defaults.
Defaults are the values that will be used if no other selection is
entered.
Rather than changing a value at each occurrence, proper
planning can cause the correct choice to appear on the majority
of items. Fewer individual changes will then be needed, saving
repetitive steps and valuable time.

The available default setups are located on the main menu

under MAINTENANCE:

Company Standards:
The settings here will be automatically included with
each new job created. Items include:
Detailing Options, Shop Notes, Specifications,
Connections, Minimum Connections and Bracing
Working Points.

Job Standards:
Similar to Company Standards, but can be customized
for a particular job. An additional item not available in
Company Standards is Job Description information.

Plotting Options:

42 Section 1

These options control the plotting and other output

features.

2.2 Model Creation

All information is entered into the database using the 3D model.

The spreadsheet table allows quick input and edits

GRIDS
The first step is to input the column grid lines and floor levels.
Vertical grid lines define the X-axis.
Horizontal grid lines define the Y-axis.
Elevation levels define the Z-axis.

COLUMNS
Columns are placed on the grid model using the mouse-input
device. As each column is entered, the corresponding data is
visible in the spreadsheet table to the right of the graphical
screen. Multiple column generation is possible by highlighting
the desired members and duplicating them along a particular
axis with specific distances between each bay. Individual
columns can be copied and placed with a click of the mouse. All
copies maintain the properties and accessories of the original
column.

BEAMS
Beams are placed on the grid model using the mouse-input
device. As each beam is entered, the corresponding data is
visible in the spreadsheet table to the right of the graphical
screen. Default connections are used unless a specific
connection is desired. Multiple beam generation is possible by
highlighting the desired members and duplicating them along a
particular axis with specific distances between each bay.
Individual beams can be copied and placed with a click of the
mouse. All copies maintain the properties and accessories of
the original beam.

Section 1 43

BRACING
Bracing members are placed on the grid model using the mouse-
input device. Separate input dialog boxes are used for unique
bracing conditions. By highlighting the supporting members
and answering a few questions, the input is complete.

PROPERTIES
Assigning the member size can be done at any time after the
elements are added to the model. Choose one of three methods
to assign a specific size and orientation to any or all members.

ACCESSORIES
Any attachment to an element, other than those created by
framing members, can be included in the model using
accessories.
Column Accessories include:
• Base and Cap Plates
• Splice Plates
• Joist Seats
• Bottom Chord Joist Tie
• Vertical Chord Tie
• Web Stiffeners
• Web Holes
• Flange Holes
Beam Accessories include:
• Moment Plates: end plate, top or bottom plate or
angle
• Curb Angles
• Support Angles
• Toe Plates
• Web Stiffeners
• Web Holes

every time you enter a job, however, it is important to make
sure you have some options set a certain way before you begin
the input process. The standards have been designed with
some pre-set variables, or defaults, which represent how many
customers will choose to set them. You will need to make sure
these defaults suit your needs.

4.5.1 Company Standards

Each job has specific settings called Job Standards. The

Company Standards contain the default information for the Job
Standards for each new job you create. Set the Company
Standards so they reflect the appropriate settings that will
apply for the majority of jobs that will be input. The job
specific data on the main Company Standards screen is in the
display-only mode, since it changes with each job. The
Company Standards file is only a template for the Job standards
file, and you can change the Job Standards file as needed per
job.

4.5.2.4 Connections

Standard connections for both Beam-to-beam and Beam-to-

column
framing conditions are set from the available choices.

• Type Connection

Type Description
Connection
Framed Any two angle, simple connection, applied to a
beam web, using field applied fasteners to its
outstanding legs and shop-applied fasteners or
welds to its web legs. Framed connections may
be shop-welded or shop-bolted.
Knifed Any two angle, simple connection, applied to a
beam web, using shop applied fasteners on the
supporting member and field-fastened to the
beam web. (Typically field-bolted)
Beam End A simplified frame connection, using a single
Plate plate shop-welded to the end of a beam, rather
than the two angles used in framed type
connections. The field fastener can be either
bolted or welded.
Moment A rigid moment connection that is shop-welded
SW/FW (SW) and field-welded (FW)
Moment A rigid moment connection that is shop-welded
SW/FB (SW) and field-bolted (FB)
Stiffener A simple column web connection and column
Shear Plate moment connection. It consists of a shear plate
connection for the beam framing to the column’s
web and two (2) column web stiffener plates that
align with the beam flanges of the column flange
moment connection.
Shear Plate A simple connection accomplished by welding a

(NS) single plate to the supporting member and

bolting to the beam web. When the shear tab is
on the near side (NS) of the member.
Skew Shear Same as Shear Plate (NS) when beam is framing at
Plate (NS) a skew angle (not 90 degrees)
Shear Plate A simple connection accomplished by welding a
(FS) single plate to the supporting member and
bolting to the beam web. When the shear tab is
on the far side (FS) of the member
Skew Shear Same as Shear Plate (FS) when beam is framing at
Plate (FS) a skew angle (not 90 degrees)
Cantilever This automatically adds clip angles, splice plates
or double splice plates, depending on how you
have set up the detailing options under
Cantilever Suspension Connection Type, on the
web of a member supported by another member
by a cantilevered suspension.
Framed A single angle, simple connection applied to a
(NS Only) beam web using field-bolted fasteners to its
outstanding leg and shop-applied fasteners to its
web leg. Angle is on the near side (NS) only.
Framed A single angle, simple connection applied to a
(FS Only) beam web using field-bolted fasteners to its
outstanding leg and shop-applied fasteners to its
web leg. Angle is on the far side (FS) only.
Knifed A single angle, simple connection, using shop
(NS Only) applied fasteners to its outstanding leg and field
applied fasteners to its web leg. The connection
angle is attached to only the near side (NS) of
the supporting member.
Knifed A single angle, simple connection, using shop
(FS Only) applied fasteners to its outstanding leg and field
applied fasteners to its web leg. The connection
angle is attached to only the far side (FS) of the
supporting member.
Tee A simple connection accomplished by shop-
Connection welding a Tee section to the supporting member
(NS) and bolting or welding to the beam web. Tee is
- FabriCAD - - Back to STAAD/Pro ->

connected on the near side (NS). Only used for
members framing into tubular columns.
Tee A simple connection accomplished by shop-
Connection welding a Tee section to the supporting member
(FS) and bolting or welding to the beam web. Tee is
connected on the far side (FS). Only used for
members framing into tubular columns
Seated A simple connection applied to columns,
consisting of plates configured in a tee to
support a beam. A seat angle can also be used
for this connection, by configuring the Set
Detailing Option.
Bent Plate A skewed connection is a one-sided connection,
(NS) using a bent plate, rather than an angle, fastened
to the beam web. A skewed connection always
will be shop-welded, field-bolted. The bent plate
is on the near side (NS). Beams parallel to the ‘X’
and ‘Y’ axis framing to a skewed beam require a
bent plate connection at the skewed end. The
bent plate must be placed on the obtuse side of
the intersection between the skewed member and
the supporting member.
Bent Plate A skewed connection is a one-sided connection,
(FS) using a bent plate, rather than an angle, fastened
to the beam web. A skewed connection always
will be shop-welded, field-bolted. The bent plate
is on the far side (FS). Beams parallel to the ‘X’
and ‘Y’ axis framing to a skewed beam require a
bent plate connection at the skewed end. The
bent plate must be placed on the obtuse side of
the intersection between the skewed member and
the supporting member.
Framing This connection provides the option of
Over supporting a beam on a cap plate that is welded
Column to a column. A cap plate must be furnished for
the column. If the holes are indicated in the cap
plate, the program provides matching holes in the
bottom flange of the beam. When a beam is
- FabriCAD - - Back to STAAD/Pro ->
Getting Started
26 Section 1

supported at more than two points, only the

exterior supports will be designed by the
program. Matching holes for any interior support
must be handled as an accessory. For field
welding a beam to a column cap, input a cap plate
with no information for hole spacing or size.
When a beam frames over a column to serve in
the capacity of a cantilever suspension member,
the end reactions, if not overridden, shall be
calculated as follows:
• The supported member shall be considered as
a simple span based on its length and section
modulus.
• The supporting member, framing over or
between two columns shall also be
considered as a simple span based on the
length of beam between columns. For
example, negative moments over supporting
columns will not be considered.
• The program allows a maximum of 2.5”
difference in top of steel for cantilever
suspension connections.
• The Frame Over Column connection can only
be used when framing over a column, as the
name implies.
Plain End Use this connection for cantilever beams, wall-

• Stiff Shear Plate: (Beam-to-Beam only)

This is valid only when using the Shear Plate connections.
• Shop Fasteners: (Beam-to-Beam and Beam-to–Column)
Enter the diameter of a bolt or weld type. Open holes
automatically will be 1/16” greater than the Field Fastener
specified.

• Shop Material: (Beam-to-Beam and Beam-to–Column)
Specify the material of the fastener selected in the previous
field. It lists regular bolts, high-strength bolts and several
welding electrode designators.

N bolt threads are included in the shear plane
X bolt threads are excluded from the shear plane

• Field Fasteners: (Beam-to-Beam and Beam-to–Column)
See description for Shop Fasteners above.
• Field Material: (Beam-to-Beam and Beam-to–Column)
See description for Shop Material above.
• Center to Center Holes: (Beam-to-Beam only)
Refers to web holes in the supporting beam only, which is
normal beam-to-beam framing. If desired, variations from the
center-to-center holes set by this entry can be overridden
on the Beams input screen for any specific beam-to-beam
connection.
• Center to Center Holes: (Beam-to-Column only)
This field is generally left blank for Beam-to-column
framing. The program will use the column gages for the
center-to-center distance between holes. If the majority of
beam-to-column flange connections require a “Like” gage
that differs from the programmed gage, this must be
entered.
CAUTION: The flange gage for all columns now will have
the value given in this input field. Any variation must b e
handled in the end connection override on the Beams input
menu. For beam-to-column web connections, any desired

variation from the programmed gage can be overridden only

by an entry on the Beams input override field.

4.5.2.5 Minimum Connection

Generally, we recommend that these fields remain set with

zeroes. However, in some cases you may need to change the
standard number of rows of holes for a certain size beam or for
a range of beam sizes throughout the job. (The beam size, or
nominal beam size, is the depth or web of the beam measured in
inches.)

For example, a 12-inch beam might only need 2 rows of holes, but if the job
indicates 3 rows of holes in all 12-inch beams, .use the table to input the
required values.
Enter the beam size <12> in the boxes under the Minimum Number of Rows
for 3 rows of holes.

From <12> inch beam

To <12> inch beam

Now the program is set to detail 3 rows of holes in all 12-inch

beams for the job. However, if 3 rows of holes cannot fit within
the beam’s web, as could happen with a coped beam, the
connection will not be detailed.

4.5.2.6 Bracing Working Points

Beam Set values define the workpoints for Standard X-bracing.

Standard X-braces must be symmetrical and must have two
continuous columns and two continuous beams forming four
sides. The four sides create what we refer to as a cell in this
manual.
The first field will indicate the workpoint at the top of the cell,
while the second field indicates the workpoint at the bottom of
t h e cell. The possible values for the top and bottom of the cell
are:

Workpoint at Intersection of Beam and Column

Top of Beam Center Line of Column
Center Line of Beam Center Line of Column
Bottom of Beam Center Line of Column
Top of Beam Face of Column
Center Line of Beam Face of Column
Bottom of Beam Face of Column
- FabriCAD - - Back to STAAD/Pro ->

Section 1 31

Column Set values define the workpoints for One-piece bracing

and Non-standard X-bracing.
• One-piece bracing is used in the program for V-bracing, K-
bracing and knee bracing.
• Non-standard bracing is used in the program for non-
symmetrical X-bracing and for X-braces that are not
contained within a four-sided cell as previously described.
The first field for input defines the workpoints on a beam. The
selections include:

Top Flange of Beam

Center Line of Beam
Bottom Flange of Beam

The second field for input defines the workpoints on a column.

The selections include:

Closest Column Face

Center Line of Column
Farthest Column Face

4.5.3 Materials

Shape properties and steel grades can be added, edited, or

deleted from this menu. Field definitions are generally self-
explanatory, however, a few may require further explanation.
• Adjusted “K”
This field allows the user to alter the “k” dimension for a
beam by section size to prevent flange blocking. If you are
not altering the “k” dimension, this field should always
match the “k” Distance field. It should never be zero (0).
• Usual Gage
This field is the usual gage in the flange for the displayed
section size. Secondary Gage is used if the usual gage is
not applicable.
• Axis X-X S
The entry in this field is the section modulus along the X-X
axis in inches cubed.

useful when you have made revisions, causing some members
to be moved around on the plotted sheets.

A dialog box will appear before futher processing continues.

Section 5
5.1 Limitations

FabriCAD will handle members up to these limits:

• 100 Base and cap plates per structure

• 500 Columns per structure
• 3000 Beams per structure
• 200 Braces per structure
• 12 Structural levels

NOTE: If your job extends beyond these limitations, you will

have to break it into separate smaller jobs.

• 500 Beams per numbering group

For jobs with 500 beams or less, number this way:

Bxxx (B1 through B500)

For jobs with more than 500 beams, number this way:

ABxxx (Start with AB1 through AB500)

BBxxx (Number the 2nd group with BB501- BB1000)
CBxxx (Number the 3rd group with CB1001- CB1500)
DBxxx (Number the 4th group with DB1501- DB2000)
…Etc. until you reach the 3000 beam structure limit.

NOTE: You may want to allow about 25 beams as a buffer

in case you want to add more beams within a numbering
group.
