POKHARA UNIVERSITY

Level: Bachelor Semester – Spring Year : 2009

Programme: BE Time : 3hrs.
Course: Chemistry Full Marks : 100
Pass Marks : 45
Candidates are required to give their answers in their own words as far
as practicable.
The figures in the margin indicate full marks.
Attempt all the questions.

1. a) Explain de-Broglie’s Principle of dual nature of electron. Calculate 5+3

the radius of the orbit of electron of Hydrogen atom which is in the
3rd energy level.(mass of electron=9.1091x10-31kg, Plank’s constant,
h=6.62x10-34Js, permittivity, to= 8.85x10 -12 kg-1m-3A2,charge on
electron, e=1.6x10 -19C)
b) Differentiate between azimuthal quantum number with magnetic 7
quantum number. What is the significance of negative value of the
total energy of electron? Calculate the wavelength of electron of
Hydrogen atom when it jumps from 4 th energy level to visible region
of the spectrometer.(Rydberg’ s constant, R= 1.097373x10 7 m -1)
2. a) How does the buffer solution resist the change in pH even on 4+3
addition of small amount of acid or base? Explain it taking suitable
example. A decinormal solution of ethanoic acid is 1.2% ionised.
Calculate the ionization constant of the acid.
b) Define standard electrode potential. How it can be measured? 3+5
Explain it taking copper electrode as an example. A galvanic cell
consists of metallic zinc plate immersed in 0.1M zinc sulphate
solution and lead plate in 0.02M lead nitrate solution. Calculate the
emf of the cell at 25oC.Also draw the cell diagram and write the cell
notation and cell reaction of the above galvanic cell.
Given:
Eo Zn++/Zn = -0.70V
Eo Pb++/Pb = -0.13V
3. a) Define electron affinity. Discuss the factors which affects on the 6+1
value of EA. Why electron affinity value of Chlorine is higher than
Fluorine?
b) Explain transition elements. Why they are called transition 8
1
elements? Discuss their position in the periodic table. Why transition
metal complexes are colourful? Explain it.
