Covid-related deaths in the last 48 hours, taking Goa’s toll to

are being initiated 20 years
later.

venture out in the sea at least

A visit to the coastal village
of Colva showed that a couple

canoes were in the sea hoping
to net the prized solar shrimp.

returned with a small catch of
shrimp or other small variety

In fact, the traditional �sh-
ermen claimed that the bad
weather and the strong winds
have hampered �shing.
“The �shing season so far
has brought us no good news.

been netted so far,” remarked

de-noti�ed by the district ad-
ministration.
In separate orders, South
Goa District Collector Ajit Roy
has stated that the order noti-
fying Arlem of Raia village of
Salcete taluka as a contain-
ment zone and bu�er zone
stands de-noti�ed with imme-
diate e�ect. The Arlem area of
Raia was declared a contain-
ment zone by the Collector by
an order dated July 23 last.
Similarly, the Collector has
de-noti�ed Usgao Ganjem vil-
lage of Ponda taluka as a con-
tainment and bu�er zone with
immediate e�ect.

With the full-commissioning
of South Goa district hospital
just a week away (September
1), hectic work is underway in
the hospital to complete the
balance work, including the
operation theatres.
Contractors and techni-
cians roped in by the Goa
State Infrastructure Devel-
opment Corporation (GSIDC)
are on the job to ensure that
the OTs and medical equip-
ment, including medical gas,
are installed well before the
deadline.
Sadly, while the govern-
ment has set September 1
deadline for the commission-
ing of the hospital, vehicular
parking in and outside the
district hospital premises is
totally out of the agenda of
the government or the GSIDC,
only raising fears that full
commissioning would only
trigger tra�c chaos outside
the complex.
Otherwise, consider this.
Part-commissioning of the
district hospital a couple of
months ago, when Hospicio
shi�ed the Out Patient De-
partment (OPD), followed by
the male and medicine wards,
had virtually created parking
woes in and around the hos-
pital.
In the absence of parking
arrangement worth its name,
visitors just parked their ve-
hicles along the national
highway and the Presentation
Convent school road – a situ-
ation which does not augur
well for a health project built
by spending crores of rupees.
GSIDC o�cials, however,
in private say the government
has still not accorded the nod
for the development of park-
ing space in front of the hospi-
tal building. If GSIDC o�cials

the forefront of the on-going
�ght to protect livelihood of
3,00,000  Goans  in the State,
urged Prime Minister Narendra
Modi for immediate interven-
tion before Goa loses its third
consecutive mining year to
the ban imposed by the Apex
Court.
By various estimates, the
state of Goa has so far faced a
loss of around  Rs 7000 crores
in the last two years due to the
stoppage of mining. “If mining
activities are not resumed im-
mediately, the loss to the state
can go as high as  Rs 10500
crores,” said a statement is-
sued by GMPF.
All mining activities in the
state were abruptly ceased on
March 15, 2018 following the

people to do swab test even if

ty Management Committee
(BMC) has recommended the
declaration of the Gulem hill-
ock, known as Ghodyapai-
kakodil Thikan, as a Biodiver-
sity Heritage Site.
The Goa State Bio-Diversi-
ty Board (GSBDB) has set the
ball rolling to identify and
declareBiodiversity Heritage
Sites (BHS) in various internal
biological and traditionally
sites in the State.
The GSBDB had invited pro-
posals and appealed to vari-
ous government authorities
and department heads to have
a consultation with local bod-
ies and identify the potential
heritage sites, as part of e�orts
to restore and protect rich eco-
systems by declaring them Bi-
odiversity Heritage Sites.
The Shristhal BMC under-
took a trek trip in search of
heritage sites and visited the
Gulem hill, which is covered
with medicinal plants, ethnic
trees and wildlife.

turing safe and e�ective COV-
ID-19 vaccines in the country
that can be easily accessible
and a�ordable for the public,
a 'Mission COVID Suraksha'
has been proposed to be set
up with a corpus of nearly Rs
3,000 crore, sources said.
Piloted by the Department
of Biotechnology, the pro-
posed mission will focus on
end-to-end vaccine develop-
ment from clinical trial stage
to regulatory facilitation to
manufacturing, sources add-
ed.
The aim of the mission is to
accelerate the development
of at least six vaccine candi-
dates and ensure that they are
licensed and introduced in
market for emergency use at
the earliest, they said.
While there is no o�cial
word on the proposed mis-
sion as yet, multiple o�cials
con�rmed that a proposal has
been made. A senior o�cial
said this is still in "a proposal
stage".
According to the dra� pro-
posal, the mission has been
proposed to have a timeline
of 12-18 months and a budget
of approximately Rs 3,000
crore.
