Asymmetrical Short Circuit and Symmetrical Short Circuit

Description: ANSI Max Short-circuit calculation only provides symmetrical fault values
Category: Short Circuit - ANSI
Type: Simulation
Keywords: Short Circuit, Asymmetrical, Symmetrical, ANSI 3 phase device duty

Q: Why does the Max short circuit calculation does not report the asymmetrical fault current
values?

A: The Max Short Circuit Analysis has not been designed to report the asymmetrical values.
This is the job of the ANSI SC Device Duty calculation. Typically the Max short-circuit
calculation is designed mostly for unbalanced faults. The asymmetrical fault currents are
considered to be worse case under the three-phase bolted fault conditions (device duty
condition)

In the future ETAP may consider adding the asymmetrical fault current values to the Max short-
circuit calculation as well for informational purposes.
