If you’ve never ridden a motorcycle before, but want to go for your

If you’ve just passed your CBT and have a little experience riding a

Road Skills is celebrating its twelfth anniversary in 2011 and this year we
have more courses, dates and trips than ever! You’ll find us in the best off-
road riding location in the whole country: South Wales on the edge of the
Brecon Beacons.

We offer a carefully planned and well-tested syllabus to develop riders from

dirt novices into confident off-road adventurers. There’s an emphasis on
learning at the same time as having fun. Now, that may sound a little bit
like being at school, but this school doesn’t have desks, it has a fleet of the
latest BMW adventure bikes, and for our playground we have the world-class
Walters Arena on the edge of the stunning Brecon Beacons National Park!

Our Level One, Two and Three courses have been created and refined
to develop riders from eager novices to masters of the dirt. Each two-
day experience is well-planned and managed by our friendly, experienced
instructors to keep you motivated, learning and, most importantly, having
fun. By the end of each course you won’t just have a lot of happy memories
– you’ll be a more skilled, confident and experienced off-road rider. You may
be surprised how much this will improve your riding on the road too!

Whilst our two-day courses are an unmatched opportunity to build up

your riding skills, we also offer Adventure Maintenance courses –
passing on the knowledge and techniques that will keep you and your bike
moving on a round-the-world trip. Our Day in the Dirt offers a chance for
riders of all abilities to put the skills acquired on the school into practice;
enjoying the many tracks and trails around the Arena and building your skills
and confidence!

For riders with a touch of the wanderlust there’s our Brecon Beacons
Adventure – a brilliant mixture of terrain. All you need is an overnight bag!
2011 also sees the return of our popular Portuguese Paradise trip. How
does six nights in stunning ‘five-star’ spa accommodation and five days
riding around the Algarve’s finest tracks and trails sound?

BMW Off Road Skills has a training course for every level and style of rider.

control skills. The techniques and experience you gather off-road directly transfer onto a
road bike, and you will be astonished at how quickly your confidence on the road builds
after just a few short hours of off-road instruction!

Level One is a perfect introduction for an off-road novice, or someone coming back to
enduro riding after a break. You may be an accomplished road rider looking for a new discover the

way to have fun and develop new skills, or may have just passed your test and fancy
a confidence boost. Either way, our Level One course is the ideal introduction to the
wonderful world of off-road riding.

of off-road

This course takes you through the Essential Core Skills lessons – key skills in
controlling a bike quickly instill a new-found confidence in your riding. We have also
allocated two Level One courses as ‘Women Only’ groups, for those who are nervous
of starting training in a mixed environment – this enables confident progression to future riding…
mixed training.

By the end of your two days with BMW Off Road Skills, you may feel like you could
ride around the world! Indeed, this is the very course that prepared Ewan McGregor
and Charley Boorman for their 24,000 mile journey.

There are four exciting and capable BMW bikes available – the new-for-2011 BMW
G 650 GS; and the F 650 GS, F 800 GS and the R 1200 GS. These four machines
vary in size, style, engine characteristics and feel – so you can choose the right bike
to suit your needs and make your training even more enjoyable.

What will I be learning?

• Learning to lift, balance and manoeuvre a motorcycle
in awkward situations
• Manoeuvring the motorcycle at slow speeds, and clutch
control exercises
• Improved braking ability
• Ascending and descending hills safely and confidently
• Trail riding on gravel fire roads and dirt tracks
• Momentum exercises

Towards the end of the course, once you have practiced

all these techniques with advice and tuition from our
friendly, experienced instructors, there is an opportunity
to swap between the four different BMW GS motorcycles
on offer, and test them out on a short changeover ride!

to the next level?
GS or Enduro – which is right for me?
Now you have completed the Level One course you are in a position to choose the bike that will
shape your next experience...

If you are an adventure bike enthusiast with a passion for travel, we suggest the Level Two GS
course, where you will be able to ride the new G 650 GS, all-terrain F 650 GS and F 800 GS
or legendary R 1200 GS on the endless trails and varied stages of Walter’s Arena!

If you are an off-road rider with a love of lightweight bikes, we’d suggest the Enduro Course. Using
the unstoppable G 450 X to gain more technical bike handling skills over the challenging sections
available around the Arena will certainly boost your riding confidence!

Land of the Incas
06 May – 21 May 2011
15 days • 2,000 miles • Visit stunning Machu Picchu • Experience Latin America

This is a true adventure! You’ll fly out to the west coast of South America to visit the incredible homeland of the Incas. This trip is a budding
explorer’s dream come true. The highlight is arguably the trip up to Machu Picchu, the Lost City of the Incas. This mysterious, cloud-wreathed
city sits 8,000ft up in the mountains and was completely untouched by the conquering Spanish armies, before being lost to history until the
early 20th Century. Your tour includes a guided tour of Machu Picchu, with an English speaking guide and the necessary train journey to
reach this lost mountain top city.

Another once-in-a-lifetime treat is a chance to view the Nasca Lines from the air. Hundreds of these giant geolyphs fill the plains, some as
long as 800ft! From stylized artwork to representations of a spaceman and animals, these mysterious shapes can best be seen from the air!
Of course the tour also takes in some stunning coastal and mountain roads to ride, the opportunity to ride some un-made gravel roads, visits
to the incredible floating islands of Uros on Lake Titicaca and a stop at Chivay to watch the condors. The memories from this trip will last
a lifetime!

Itinerary: Chiclayo – Huanchaco – Paracas – Nasca Lines – Cusco (three nights with many optional excursions e.g. Pisac market and
Sacsayhuaman) – Machu Picchu – Lake Titicaca – Colca Canyon

Highlights: Machu Picchu • Lake Titicaca • Nasca Lines • Condor watching • R 1200 GS hire bike and back up vehicle included

Morocco & the Atlantic Coast
17 April – 03 May 2011
17 days • 2,900 miles • Based on one of our most popular tours ever
• Highest mileage tour on the calendar

We’ve taken one of the most popular tours on our calendar and packed in even more! After
a pleasant ferry crossing to Santander, you’ll ride down through Spain, enjoying the beautiful
climate and food as we experience the stunning Sierra de Gredos and the Great Plains. A stop
in Seville marks our final day in Europe. The next evening we cross the Straits of Gibraltar and
arrive at the Spanish enclave of Ceuta and have a night in a splendid Parador.

Then into Morocco and first to the city of Fes, the most complete and untouched medieval city
still in existence! From here we embark on a trip across the breathtaking Atlas Mountains, enjoy
a night wandering through the traditional souq in the former imperial city of Marrakesh and reach
our furthest point south at Taroudant, before turning west to run up the Atlantic coast and a stop
at the beautiful resort and port of Essouria. You’ll experience the stunning desert landscapes and

Seville at Easter
17 April – 01 May 2011
15 days • 1,800 miles • Stunning Easter festival • Fabulous Ronda Valley

Seville is the cultural, financial and artistic capital of southern Spain. With a long and fascinating
history, Seville has passed back and forth between conquering forces, resulting in a blend of
Spanish, Islamic and Moorish architecture and culture. Many original Moorish elements remain,
including public structures, the historic district and large sections of the fortified city wall.
Seville at Easter is truly magical. Our trip will centre on the Easter Parades. With thousands
of the faithful carrying altars and devotional trinkets through the streets, Andalusia celebrates
its festivals with passion and abandonment.

While the festival is the focus of the trip, it’s by no means the only treat in store. The southern
plains of Spain are home to some of the finest roads in existence, graced with a pleasant
climate year-round. Ronda is an old Roman hilltop city, carved in two by the mighty Guadalevín
river and linked to the world-famous Rhonda Valley, as featured in Bike magazine. This trip will
focus on the finer things in life with several Spanish Paradors along the way, as well as hotels
in the heart of historic Salamanca and Seville. We will also stay within the walls of Cacares en
route, where the original Roman walls still surround this medieval enclave.

Viking Adventure
10 June – 24 June 2011
15 days • 1,800 miles • Longer Nordic adventure • Stunning landscape

Northern Europe has some of the most incredible scenery in the world. The towering peaks
tumble down into vast fjords stretching dozens of miles inland, glaciers creep down from the
hills and snow-capped peaks are always within sight. Yet in the summer, in the low valleys,
temperatures can be scorching! The Scandinavian nations have truly stunning landscapes,
linked by utterly empty roads which snake gracefully around the foothills and tunnel through
the mountains. And, of course, Scandinavian hospitality is second to none!

The further north we travel, the longer the days become. From perpetual twilight in Bergen
to sunshine at midnight in the far northern reaches, it’s a truly surreal experience that will be
treasured forever. On this newly extended Scandinavian adventure you will have even more time
to experience traditional Norwegian hotels, charming waterfronts, the cultural hotspot of Bergen
and plenty of fjord ferries!

Motorrad Days is the ultimate celebration of all things two-wheeled and BMW! Last year was
bigger than ever, with more than 40,000 visitors. Entertainment includes stunt displays and off-

hospitality to the full until you have experienced the true Oktoberfest spirit with a stein of cold
lager in your hand, an oompah band playing in the background, and a great party atmosphere.

This year’s trip is more focussed on the central event: Motorrad Days! We cross into France,
enjoy two overnight stops on the way to Garmisch Partenkirchen, two nights at BMW Motorrad

This stunning region of Italy has long been one of our most popular destinations, so after

Verona: home of the 2,000 year-old open-air Roman amphitheatre, which plays host to opera
performances in the summer.

But of course the true highlight of this trip is the riding: there are passes, hairpins, tunnels and
bends beyond compare. From the Dolomites down to Lakes Como and Garda, this tour will
deliver day after day of superb riding, giving you opportunities to hone your skills in breathtaking

Our Austrian odyssey is a firm favourite. And with superb alpine roads, endless hairpin bends

most biker friendly – regions in Western Europe.

Ride to the End of the World

18 February – 04 March 2012
16 days • 2,000 miles • Off-road riding • Visit the southernmost
city in the world

Now, this is a real adventure rider’s dream! Are you looking for a trip which will test your abilities,
give you a chance to show off your riding skills and take you to places that tourists rarely get to
experience? Then read on! Patagonia is a remote, but incredibly beautiful, part of the world which
spans Chile and Argentina. It offers an amazing combination of dirt and tarmac riding against a
backdrop of turquoise lakes, jagged granite mountains and blue glaciers. We ride off the beaten
track through some incredibly beautiful places tourists often don’t get to experience on the run
down to Ushuaia, across the Magellan Straits on Tierra Del Fuego – The Land of Fire.

This route includes approximately 700 miles of gravel roads through Patagonia, on Carretera Austral
and Ruta 40. Ruta 40 can be subject to cross winds and, on occasions, deep gravel, so you’ll need
to have some relevant experience and a taste for adventure – we would recommend Simon Pavey’s
Level One BMW Off Road Skills course for any off-road beginners. The infrastructure here can be
poor, with up to 200 miles between stops! Patagonia may be one of our hardest trips but it’s one
which will make for the very best bar room tales! The road ends at Ushuaia, the most southern city
in the world known locally as Fin Del Mundo – The End of the World!

Sardinia & Corsica
09 September – 23 September 2011
15 days • 2,000 miles • Mediterranean climate • Beaches and coast riding

A return to one of our most fondly remembered destinations in 2011! The Italian island of Sardinia boasts some of the best beaches
in the Mediterranean, as well as countless open roads, mountain passes and yet more routes through canyons and forests. From here
we take a ferry to the neighbouring French island of Corsica – which is even more mountainous than Sardinia, offering yet more riding
opportunities! This tour will include five ferry crossings, one of them overnight.

The stunning town of Ajaccio is the Corsican capital and the birthplace of French Emperor and revolutionary Napoleon Bonaparte. Rich
in history and natural beauty, this sea-front city is just one of the places to visit in Corsica. The tour includes ample time to enjoy the
culture and natural splendour of both islands – with national parks and opportunities to watch golden eagles and ospreys hunting, relax
by the many lakes and lagoons or watch local pottery and ceramics being crafted and fired. And, of course, a bit of time to enjoy the
hundreds of miles of perfect golden beaches!
