“Poncho Zuleta”
Tomás Alfonso Zuleta Díaz (Villanueva, La Guajira, September 18,
1949), better known as Poncho Zuleta, called "The Golden Lung" for his
powerful voice and affectionately nicknamed "Tin Throat" by García
Márquez, is a Colombian vallenato composer and singer.
Poncho started in vallenato music at a very young age, acquiring skills in
instruments such as the caja and guacharaca, while distinguishing himself as a
composer and verse maker. He recorded more than thirty albums in the company
of his brother Emiliano Zuleta Díaz, with whom he formed the successful group Los
Hermanos Zuleta.
In 2006, brothers Poncho and Emilianito became the first group to win a Latin
Grammy in the Cumbia/Vallenato category.
Poncho was honored along with his brother Emiliano during the 2016 Vallenata
