Thick Cylinders
1- Difference between thick and thin cylinders
The main differences between thin and thick cylinders are:-
1- The radial stress is not neglected.
2- The hoop stress is not constant like thin cylinders.
3- The longitudinal is calculated more accurate.
4- Stress in 2 and 3 are not constant

2- Development of the Lame’s theory

1
for small angles

Neglecting second order terms

The longitudinal strain is constant,

2
Substituting in above equation

Multiplying by r and rearranging, yields

Integrating

Substituting

3- Thick cylinder – Internal Pressure Only

Substituting the above boundary conditions in Lames Equation

……………………….(1)

……………………….(2)

Solving these two equations, yields

4- Longitudinal Sress in Thick Cylinders

For horizontal equilibrium,

5- Maximum Shear Stress

4
6- Change in Cylinder Dimensions

7- Compound Thick Cylinders

From the previous equations, it is evident that there is a large variation

in hoop stress across the wall of a cylinder subjected to internal pressure.
To get rid of this effect, cylinders are often built up by shrinking one
tube on to the outside of another

To solve for same materials, we break the problem into three parts,

As in figure below,
