The Cumberland News 2
THREE rising young stars in the competitive world of opera, Alexander Grove, Mark Chaundy and James
Edwards, along with pianist Ben Dawson, treated us to a varied programme arranged for three tenor
voices.
Mark Chaundy had stepped in at very short notice so music stands had to be used in the medleys, but this
did not detract from the performance.
The music was chosen to suit their very different voice qualities and personalities – from Handel to
Verdi and Lehar to Legrand – skilfully linked by Alexander Grove.
Alexander’s performance of Lensky’s aria from Eugene Onegin was sung with sensitivity,
authority, and great stage presence.
Una Fortiva Lagrima showed off the rich quality of James Edwards’ voice and Mark Chaundy
interpreted Quilter’s Deep Valley beautifully.
The audience were delighted to hear songs made famous by Gigli, Lanza, McCormick and Pavarotti.
There was much to enjoy in this concert but Bring Him Home from Les Miserables, Funniculi Funnicula,
Granada and Nessun Dorma were outstanding.
At the end, the audience were on their feet shouting for more and they got it with O Sole Mio given the
full Three Tenors treatment!
