The four soloists, Pat Pictor, Kathleen Peacock, Alexander Grove and Dean Robinson, were all excellent
in their own arias and were particularly good when singing together. The blend of their voices was
exquisite and they sang with such musicality it was a real pleasure to hear them.
The solo arias showed Rossini as the opera composer he really was – Alexander Grove had some
exciting leaps to negotiate in the Domine Deus and Dean Robinson’s bass solo Quoniam showed his
beautiful, even tone and vocal range. The more contemplative arias in the second half were also
beautifully sung. Pat Pictor’s moving interpretation of the O Salutaris and Crucifixus led on to
Kathleen Peacock’s intensely felt Agnus Dei.
It was exciting to hear such a big choir as the Lanercost Festival Chorus sing with such sensitivity.
Anthony Peacock brought out excellent contrasts from his forces.
Cilla Grant and Ian Hare did wonders on the piano and harmonium, and drew orchestral colours from the
keyboards. The evening was made even more magical by the beautiful weather.
