IDENTIFICATION MARKING OF PLASTICS IN PRODUCTS

CONTENTS
Requirements for marking IKEA plastics products and components with plastic identification
markings.

PURPOSE
Facilitate handling, waste recovery or disposal of plastics products and components.

1. REQUIREMENTS
Plastics products and components weighing 50 grames or more shall be marked as described below.

Packaging and disposable containers are excluded from the requirements.

Any exceptions to the requirements or additional requirements are given in the article's technical de-
scription.

1.1 Identification markings


Single and multi-constituent plastics materials used in IKEA products shall be marked to identify
the material.

Plastics identification markings shall be in accordance with the symbols and abbreviated terms
contained in ISO 1043 using the system described in ISO 11469 (latest editions apply).

Below are some examples of markings for commonly used plastics at IKEA.

Important!
Note that for Styrene-Acryl-Nitrile SAN the symbol AS must be used. This is because SAN is a
registered trademark in Japan and the U.S.A.

1.2 Method of marking


Markings shall be in relief, minimum height / depth 0.2 mm. Letter height shall not be less than 2.0
mm and where practicable 5.0 mm or more.

1.3 Location
For products made of a single plastic, a single marking only is required.

For products containing more than one plastic, each component shall be marked.

The location of the marking is shown in the product's technical drawings.

For furniture the marking shall be placed on a C-surface (see: IOS-PRF-0011, ABC of Furniture
Surfaces).
