Safety Lighting Systems – 5 Easy Steps
Philips Lightolier
emergency lighting design

Step 1 - Identify Egress Routes

Emergency Egress Routes are defined as the quickest routes for people to leave a building.
A. Have your customer illustrate or bring in a layout of the space that requires emergency lighting.
B. Locate all doors that provide access to the exterior.
C. Identify egress routes from all areas to the nearest exit door.

10 ft
50 ft

In this example the doorways and egress

routes have been identified with arrows.
These 5 Easy Steps were created to help you with emer-
gency lighting design. The Steps will take you through the
selection and placement process of emergency lighting
equipment including the selection of DC voltage, lamp
heads, battery unit capacity and wire gauge size. Selecting
lamp heads is made easy using the Quick Reference Tables
on pages 712-716 or for greater accuracy, using the exact
ISO footcandle Diagram found below each table.

Step 2 - Placing Exit Signs

Exit signs must be visible from all general areas in a building.
A. Place an exit sign above all doors providing access to the exterior.
B. Place exit signs at the end of hallways that lead to the final exit doors. Identify the direction of egress using
chevrons.
C. Place exit signs in open areas located at the points of changing egress direction. Use chevrons to indicate
direction of egress.
D. Place exit signs at the top or bottom of stairs.
E. Determine if you require an exit, sortie or bilingual sign.
F. From the layout determine the quantity of single face or double face signs that are needed for each location
identified.
• Single faces are best used over doorways or where only one side is visible
• Dual faces are ideal for open areas or hallways where both sides of the exit sign will be visible and provide
direction to an exit
• Universal signs are a great choice if you know the number of signs that are needed but not necessarily
how many single or dual faces are needed or how they will be mounted. Universal signs come with all the
hardware to mount the unit in various ways and components to make the unit into a single or dual face
G. After you have selected the type of signs you require, choose either a steel sign or aluminum sign if
applicable and find the appropriate part number in the list of products.

10 ft
50 ft

In this example, 6 Exit signs would be required

(4 Single Face Signs & 2 Dual Face Signs).
Philips Lightolier Exit signs use only
1W per face.

emergency lighting design

Step 3 - Placing Remote Heads
Remote heads must be placed at points along the egress route to illuminate the path to 1 footcandle.
A. Select a voltage for the system. 12V is a standard voltage used for most office applications however, for
very small applications 6V is ideal and for extremely large jobs 24V would be the best choice. The higher
the voltage the further you are able to run wire from the battery units to the exit signs and remote heads
and you are able to put higher loads on each battery unit. Once you have come to Step 4 this is outlined
in further detail.
B. Select a remote head model and pick the product at the voltage required.
C. Determine the height of the ceilings where the product will be placed and ensure the ceiling height is not
above 10 ft.
D. For each of the egress paths indicated determine the length for each of the identified routes. To determine
the quantities of remote heads that are needed, divide the length of the path by the maximum spacing
between remotes as indicated for the product that was selected. Example: 46 ft Egress route using
a Double 9W Tungsten Remote Head at suggested fixture spacing of 23 ft would require 2 Double Remote
Heads spaced 23 ft apart (46ft ÷ 23ft = 2 Remotes).
E. Add double remote heads in conference rooms, washrooms, stairways and any room with a potential of
8 or more occupants.

10 ft
50 ft

In this example, a total of 9 double and one

single 9W Tungsten remote heads are used.
A total of 19 lamp heads = (19 X 9W) = 171W.

Safety Lighting Systems – 5 Easy Steps
Philips Lightolier
emergency lighting design

Step 4 - Determine Maximum Remote Head to Battery Unit Distance

The maximum allowable distance between the battery unit and the furthest remote head or sign is limited by the selected DC emergency voltage, wire gauge size and load
wattage for each emergency circuit. Wire gauge size for an emergency circuit should be no less than 12, a typical industry practice.
A. Divide the emergency system layout into separate wiring circuits.
B. Calculate the load on each circuit. To calculate the load for each circuit identified you must:
• Add the wattage of each remote head that was selected in Step 3 for the circuit you are calculating (if using a Double 9W Tungsten Remote Head for example the load
would be 9W X 2 Heads = 18W)
• Add the wattage of each sign that was selected in Step 1 for the circuit you are calculating (Exit Signs use 1W, Sorties use 2W and Bilingual Exit/Sortie Signs use 3W)
• Add together the two totals you have found above. Complete Step 4B for each circuit identified
C. Use the previous chart to determine the maximum length of wire that can be run on each circuit based on the wire gauge to be use. To identify the appropriate lengths,
select the Emergency Voltage that was identified in Step 3A and the Load for each circuit identified in Step 4B. Round up to the next available emergency load watts
identified in the chart. (For example if Circuit 1 is using 64W you would select the 72W emergency load to determine the length of wire runs.)
D. Write down the emergency load watts that was selected for each circuit as it will be used in Step 5 to identify the best battery units to be used on each circuit.

10 ft
50 ft

In this example:

CIRCUIT 1st Emergency Circuit Load Wattage: Six 9W remote heads plus five
1W Exit=(6 x 9W)+(5 x 1W)=59W
2
2nd Emergency Circuit Load Wattage: Seven 9W remote heads plus one
1W Exit=(7 x 9W)+(1 x 1W)=64W
3rd Emergency Circuit Wattage: Six 9W remote heads = (6 X 9W) = 54W

CIRCUIT CIRCUIT
Circuits 1,2,3 would require a 72 emergency load watts as per the chart.
1 Emergency DC voltage=12V. Emergency circuit wire gauge=12-gauge.
3 Chart shows a maximum wire run distance of 29 ft needed on each circuit.

Step 5 - Selecting & Placing Battery Units

Battery units are required to provide emergency power to lamp heads and signs in the event of a utility power failure.
A. Based on the emergency loads identified for each circuit, match the totals with the appropriate battery unit based on the battery unit capacity and the system voltage.
Round up to the next available battery unit size if exact unit is not available. You will need at least one battery unit for each of the circuits.
B Place the battery unit(s) in an appropriate location. The unit may replace a set of remote lamp heads if the battery units incorporate the same number and type of heads
on top of the unit.

In this example :
Three 12V - 72W Battery Units will be used, one for each of the 3 circuits identified:
Circuit 1: Total Load was 59W and would require a Battery Unit with a 72W capacity
Circuit 2: Total Load was 64W and would require a Battery Unit with a 72W capacity
Circuit 3: Total Load was 54W and would require a Battery Unit with a 72W capacity

Guideline For Using Mini Heads and Mini Remotes (M and MR)
Photometric Diagrams
The ISO footcandle diagrams of emergency
lighting heads and remotes in this section are
designed to allow for fast and easy lighting layout
estimates. The diagrams show illumination levels
on the floor at the suggested mounting heights.
The indicated "Lamp Head Spacing" is the dis-
tance between double remotes or double heads on
battery units. For recessed heads this spacing
indicates the distance between individual lamp
heads. The standard aiming angle is 45 degrees
vertical from the floor.
For more critical situations, please consult our
factory for available IES formatted photometrics
for use in a lighting layout program to determine
accurate average and minimum emergency light-
ing levels.
