Example 17. Represent and on the number line

Solution: Here the rational numbers and have different denominators.

LCM of their denominators = 6

Converting them into equivalent rational numbers with denominator 6, we get

= = ; = =

COMPARISON OF RATIONAL NUMBERS

• Comparison of a negative and a positive rational number is obvious as a
negative rational number is always less than a positive rational number.
• Two positive rational numbers can be compared exactly as we compare
two fractions.
• Two negative rational numbers can be compared by ignoring their
negative signs and then reversing the order.
STEPS TO COMPARE TWO GIVEN RATIONAL NUMBERS :
Step I: Express the rational numbers with positive denominators
Step II: Take L.C.M. of the positive denominators
Step III: Express each rational number with L.C.M. as common
denominator
Step IV: Compare the numerators.
Step V: The number having the greater numerator is greater.

RATIONAL NUMBERS BETWEEN TWO RATIONAL NUMBERS:

We know that the number of integers between two integers is finite.

But, the number of rational numbers between any two rational numbers
is infinite.

Consider the rational numbers between and

 , , are rational numbers between the given numbers.

 If we write as and as , we get the rational

numbers , ,……...….., , .

 If we write as and as , we get the rational

numbers , ,……...….., , .

 Therefore, there are infinite rational numbers between any two given
rational numbers.

Example 21. Find five rational numbers between and

Solution: Converting and to rational numbers with same
denominator.
LCM of 5 and 6 is 30.
= = and = =
Now we have to find five rational numbers between and .

, , and are five rational numbers between and

Example 22. Insert five rational numbers between and

Solution: Converting and to rational numbers with same
denominator.
LCM of 2 and 4 is 4.
= =

Now we have to find five rational numbers between and .

So we write as and as
Five rational numbers between and are

, , , and
