DEPARTMENT OF MATHEMATICS AND STATISTICS

Final Exam Mathematics 3202 Winter 2011

Date: April 14, 2011 SHOW ALL WORK Time: 2 hours

1. The temperature T at points in 1R3 is given by T(x, y, z) = x2+y2+z2. In what direction

should a bug leave P(2, 1, 2) to

[4] (a) warm up most rapidly? Give the maximum rate as well.
[4] (b) cool off most rapidly? Give the minimum rate as well.
[4] (c) Find the curve along which a bug should wind its way through I, starting at
P(2, 1, 2) to be always warming up most rapidly.

[4] 2. Find all unit vectors 11 for which the directional derivative D of f(x, y) = x2 + sin(xy)
at the point (1, 0) has the value 1.

[4] 3. (a) Find the surface area of the surface given parametrically by r(u, v) = u2i+uvj+v2k

for0<u1, 0<v2.

[4] (b) Evaluate

x
ff
u cos v, y
F• dS ,

u sin v,
where F = xi + yj + z4k and S is the parametric surface

for 0 2,
= = z = u u 0 v 2ir oriented upward.
[4] (c) Find the equation of the tangent plane to the parametric surface r(n, v) = 2u cos vi+
3usinvj + n2k at the point (0, 6, 4).

[10] 4. Compute the curvature ic for the path given by r(t) = sinti + sintj + V’costk.

[8] 5. Evaluate HR Zxy cIA where R is the parallelogram determined by the lines 2x + 3y = 1,
2x + 3y = 3, x = 2, and x

= —2 by making an appropriate change in variables.

[1 6. (a) Find the volume lying inside the sphere x2 + y2 + z2 = 2z and inside the cone
= x2 + y2

[4] (b) Find the surface area of that portion of the paraboloid z = 1 + x2 + y2 that lies
below the plane z = 5.

[4] (c) Evaluate

x2 + y2 =
fff (x2 + y2) dV over the first octant region bounded by the cylinders
1 and x2 + y2 = 4 and the planes z = 0, z = 1, x = 0, and x = y.
7. A force field is defined by F =
y2i + (2xy + e3z)j + 3ye3zk.

[4] (a) Show that F is conservative.

[4] (b) Find a scalar potential f(x, y, z) so that F = Vf.
—2—
[4] (c) Find the amount of work done by F in moving a particle from t = —ito t = 1 along
the curve x = t, y = t2, z = /i t2. —

8. A line integral I is given by

= Ic axy2zdx + /3x2yzdy + ‘yx2y2dz

where a , 3, and ‘y are constants, and C is the path joining P0 to P1.

[4] (a) Find a and 3 in terms of ‘y so that I will be independent of the path of C.
[4] (b) For the choices of a, /3 and 7 you have obtained in part(a) above, evaluate
where C is the curve of intersection of the paraboloid z
f F dr,
x2 + 4y2 and the plane
z = 3x 2y from (0, 0,0) to (sinir,cos,sin2ir).

[6] 9. Evaluate (sinx + 3y2)dx + (2x — e2)dy where C is the boundary of the half disc
x2 + y2 9, y 0, oriented counterclockwise.

[7] 10. Evaluate the surface integral ff. F itS where F(x, y, z) = xi + yj + zk and S is composed
of the hemisphere z = x2 y2 and the disk in the xy-plane bounded by the circle

x2 + y2 = 9

[9] 11. Let F = Pi + Qj be a vector field such that F• dr = 12. Determine F dr
