Risk in Outdoor Recreational Activities:

Land:

 Plant Dermatitis - (also called ‘phytodermatitis’) is a reaction to skin contact with

certain plants. It is not always obvious which plant is responsible for
the dermatitis (also known as eczema). Sometimes a rash may develop without
direct contact with the plant; the juices may be on clothing or the fingers. A
plant cause for dermatitis is suspected when there is a linear or streaky pattern.
It is nearly always asymmetrical. The rash may take various forms. Some plants
only cause a rash if the sun is shining on the skin at the same time. This is
called photocontact dermatitis. Big blisters appear on exposed parts which have
been in contact with the plant. Anyone can get this kind of plant dermatitis,
which settles leaving pigmentated patches, which may last several months.
When caused by perfume, it is known as ‘berloque dermatitis’.
Water:

 Drowning - is defined as respiratory impairment as a result of being in or under a

liquid. Drowning typically occurs silently, with only a few people able to wave
their hands or call for help. Symptoms following rescue may include breathing
problems, vomiting, confusion, or unconsciousness. Occasionally symptoms may
not appear until up to six hours afterwards. Drowning may be complicated
by low body temperature, aspiration of vomit, or acute respiratory distress
syndrome. Drowning is more common when the weather is warm and among
those with frequent access to water. Risk factors include alcohol use, epilepsy,
and low socioeconomic status. Common locations of drowning include swimming
pools, bathtubs, natural bodies of water, and buckets .
Air:

 Heat cramps
Heat cramps are painful muscle spasms caused by heat, dehydration, poor
conditioning, and the body's salt loss. Tired muscles--those used for performing
the work--are usually the ones most susceptible to cramps.
