    The autonomic nervous system (ANS) is divided into the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems. The ANS involuntarily regulates cardiac muscle, smooth muscle, glandular and visceral functions below the level of consciousness. It has a two-neuron chain from the central nervous system to the effector organ. The sympathetic nervous system is associated with the thoracolumbar region and produces diffuse, physiologic responses. The parasympathetic nervous system is associated with the craniosacral region and produces more discrete, localized responses in effector organs. The vagus nerve accounts for over 75% of parasympathetic nervous system activity.
