what the items are and show them an image of each item.
-“When we go to a Eucharist or mass, we see the priest use a lot of
different items. These items are important to have when we are
celebrating the Eucharist, or a mass and we see them all the time.”
-“The first item that we see at a Eucharist celebration is a lectern. The
priest stands behind this when he is reading from the bible and telling us
all about Jesus.”
-“The second item that we see at a Eucharist celebration is an altar. It is
a long table that the priest stands behind when he is blessing and
preparing the bread and the wine to share with all of us in the church.”
-“The third item that we see at a Eucharist celebration is a chalice and
this is used to hold the blood of Jesus Christ.”
-“The fourth item that we see at a Eucharist celebration is a ciborium and
this is used to hold the body of Jesus Christ.”
-“The fifth item that we see at a Eucharist celebration is the bread or it
can also be called the host and we all know that this is the body of Jesus
Christ which is given up for us.”
-“The last item that we see at a Eucharist celebration is the wine and we
also all know that this is the blood of Jesus Christ that is given up for us.”

Lesson Steps (Lesson content, structure, strategies & Key Questions):

5 mins When the teacher has finished explaining and showing what each item is
to the students, she will go on to read the story Sophie Wonders about Book: Sophie Wonders about
the Eucharist written by Debby Bradley. She will ask the students to pay the Eucharist written by Debby
close attention to the story as they might see some of these special items Bradley.
appear in the story.

After reading the story to the students the teacher will ask the students
the following wonder questions:
-“I wonder if you can remember what the six special items are that we
see at a Eucharist celebration?”
-“I wonder why these items are important to use in a mass?”
-“I wonder how Jesus set his table when he had his last supper with his
friends the apostles?”

The teacher will then explain to the students that they have two activities
to complete during the lesson. The first activity is that each student will
be given an activity sheet with pictures of the six items that were Cut and paste activity sheets,
discussed in the lesson and the names of these items will be muddled up scissors, glue, A3 paper,
beneath the images. The students must cut out and glue down the coloured and lead pencils, pop
picture to its matching name tag on a separate A3 paper, and once they sticks, string, feathers, ribbon
have matched all images then they are able to colour in the images. The and collage trolley.
second activity requires the students to draw a picture of a chalice. The
students will then cut it out and decorate the chalice with the available
materials on the collage trolley.

Lesson Closure:(Review lesson objectives with students)

To close the lesson the teacher will ask the students to clean up their
desks and hand in their completed cut and paste image activity sheets to
her. Then she will ask the students to be seated in a circle on the carpet
and for each student to bring their completed chalice that they had made
during the lesson. In the centre of the circle will be all of the food items Food that each student bought
that each student had brought in from home to share with the rest of the in to share, A Holy Meal
class during the shared meal. Before beginning the shared meal, the prayer, chalice creations.
teacher will say the prayer A Holy Meal, with the students to bless the
meal they are about to share as Jesus did at his last supper.

Transition: (What needs to happen prior to the next lesson?)

After the shared classroom meal has ended the students will be asked to
hand in their chalices to the teacher which she will display around the
classroom. The students must then work together to clear the carpet of
the foods shared during the meal. Once this is complete the teacher will
dismiss each student by faction colour to grab their hat from their pigeon
hole and line up quietly at the door ready to be dismissed for lunch.

Assessment: (Were the lesson objectives met? How will they be

assessed?)
To assess whether or not the lesson objectives were met, the teacher will
use each students’ completed cut and paste activity sheets. This activity
sheet will assist the teacher in assessing objective one of the lesson. The Checklist.
teacher will assess the achievement of this objective by seeing whether
or not the student could correctly match the image to the name tag. This
information will be recorded on a checklist.

To assess objective two, the teacher will collect all the completed chalice
creations. She will assess them by seeing if the student could correctly
draw the chalice. The third objective will be assessed by the teacher
observing the student’s interactions with each other during the shared
meal. The teacher will observe whether or not the students are respectful
and understand how important this event is and that they are using the
meal time as a reflection on how they believe the last supper was
conducted by Jesus.
