A 15-MINUTE ACTIVITY TO TEACH INTERCULTURAL COMMUNICATION AWARENESS

 Aims:
Main aims:
- to introduce 2 cultural aspects: greetings and address systems to students
- to make comparison with other countries, esp. Vietnam
Subsidiary aim:
- to practice speaking skills

 Procedure:
- Ask students to watch video 1 and find out the answers for 2 questions:
o What can you see in the video?
-> Suggested answers will be students’ description of what they have watched.
o What do you find it interesting?
-> Expected answer will be that they hug each other or shake hands when
greeting. The elderly calls their peers or their juniors by names while the juniors
call the older ‘Mr./Mrs./Ms. + last name’.

- Ask students whether they hear similar conversations or experience similar situations
- Ask students to discuss in groups about the differences in Vietnam
- Invite 1-2 groups to share their ideas and the others add more points if necessary.
Then, give feedback
- Provide further information / examples of other countries, e.g. Thailand, China, Korea,
etc. and encourage students to share what they’ve known about other countries
E.g. Thais address people with the polite title ‘Khun คุณ’ and follow by the first name
(e.g. Khun Supansa คุณสุพรรษา, Khun Mongkol คุณมงคล, Khun Siriporn คุณสริ พ
ิ ร.) They
also address to a more senior person with the word ‘Peê พี่ and a younger one with the
word ‘Náwng น ้อง’ followed by their nickname e.g. Peê Sô m พีส ้ Peê Joy พีจ
