More  about  the  codes

IBM SPSS products require an annual update of its license code to function. Site license installations
require the user to update the code manually every year. SPSS network installations and managed desktop
packages use the centrally updated IS license servers – so no need for codes in those cases.

Software Services web pages about the SPSS site license deal can be found at: http://www.ed.ac.uk/schools-
departments/information-services/services/computing/desktop-personal/software/main-software-deals/spss

Authorization Codes are about 20 characters long and look like: 4a581exxxxxxd5869609. They should not be confused with
License Codes which are much longer, about 92 characters and look like:
YJWIPNMC6CR4NMAKZKB2CTCFSJC38GHHKSXXXXXXXFMA6TJMYJIEK7KS7DFVPQNEFMO5YB269PNSWST
ZJDXE27TFOJ8BK.
If needed, license codes have to be requested from the software services team via is.software.codes@ed.ac.uk

THE  SPSS  CODE  CYCLE  FOLLOWS  THE  ACADEMIC  YEAR.
• 2013/14 codes can be used for new installations up to the end of August 2014.
• If installed by then SPSS will continue to work until the end of September 2014.
These guides are written using SPSS 19, but the process is very similar for SPSS 20 and 21.
Authorization codes can be supplied by a school computing officer or license administrator, directly from
Software Services or IS Helpdesk depending how the license was purchased. These are confidential codes
so please do not publish them or make the software available online.
Anyone who receives a copy of the software and codes, licensed to the University of Edinburgh, has to
sign the SPSS copyright acknowledgement form on receipt of software or codes as part of the site license
and return it to software services. A copy of the form can be found the end of this document.
Please abide by the terms and conditions of the agreement. In particular, (and not explicitly mentioned on
the copyright form) SPSS cannot be installed on NHS machines, neither can it be used for NHS work nor
distributed to NHS staff. A copy of the full agreement can by requested from Software Services.

DOCUMENTATION  AND  GUIDES
IBM provide guides on the SPSS install disk including the Site License Installation Instructions.pdf
and the Network License Installation Instructions.pdf found in the directory
Installation Documents > either MacOS or Windows > IBM SPSS Statistics
Copies have also been placed on the IS Statistical Computing wiki where there are local step by step
installation guides and link to technical tips:
https://www.wiki.ed.ac.uk/display/ISstatsComp/Installing+SPSS+19
If  you  use  the  IBM  published  instructions  please  DO  NOT  CONTACT  IBM  SPSS  directly  for
support  or  codes.  You  will  only  be  referred  back  to  the  university  and  delay  the  response.
Both IT support and codes issues should be directed to local services as follows:

FOR  IT  SUPPORT

If you are having problems or require help with installation or renewal, please contact the IS helpdesk or
your school IT support, detailing the operating system, any error message, error number and symptom
number you might be getting. IS help services details can be found at:

Installing  IBM  SPSS  Statistics
How you install SPSS will depend on your own circumstances. There are four scenarios:
1. University  Managed  desktop  Computer 3
2. Installation  on  a  Computer  on  EdLAN 3 ,  the  university  network
3. Installation  on  a  Computer  on  the  internet 4  during  installation
4. Installation  on  a  Computer  without  any  network 4  connection

After installing SPSS using Senario 1 or 2, Information Services will administer your licenses for you, so
you shouldn’t have to worry about the annual code renewal.
Please make sure you sign the copyright form at the end of this document and return it to the Software
Services team.

1.   MANAGED  DESKTOP
At the moment on the managed desktops:
• SPSS 19 is available for Windows 7 managed desktop
• SPSS 18 is available for Macintosh Snow Leopard managed desktop,
• SPSS 20 is available for Macintosh Lion managed desktop
• SPSS 21 will be available for the new Mountain Lion desktop when it is released. It has also been
packaged for Windows 7.
SPSS 19 is the version currently used in all the public labs for academic year 2013/2014.
If you have a managed desktop machine, a copy of SPSS is automatically on your computer, if it is in the
SPSS group. If it is not on your managed desktop computer then your computing officer, support team or
IS help services should be able to put your machine in the SPSS group. Once it’s added to the group the
next time you restart your machine SPSS will be available.
NEVER  manually  install  SPSS  on  a  managed  desktop  computer  without  first  consulting
whoever  manages  the  computer.
ALWAYS  seek  advice  from  your  school  support  or  IS  help  services  if  you’re  not  sure.
3
You need the computer to be permanently linked to the Edinburgh university network, EdLAN, while using SPSS. Although
there is a facility to issue 'commuter' licenses for laptops, so they can run SPSS for up to 7 days away from EdLAN and still
use the license server.
4
We would recommend that you connect your computer to the network to authorize across the network if at all possible. It is
much quicker simpler process and less prone to errors and delays.

University  of  Edinburgh       SPSS  19,  20  &  21         Page  3  of  8
2.   INSTALLATION  ON  A  EDLAN3  NETWORKED  COMPUTER
If you or your computing officer are installing SPSS on your computer using an SPSS install disk or
downloaded software, you have to have administration rights for the computer to install SPSS. If you
have a networked computer then you can make use of the Information Services license server to license
your copy of SPSS.
• Choose the Network License option
• At the License Server/Manager step and put in the phrase
o is-lic1.is.ed.ac.uk: is-lic2.is.ed.ac.uk: is-lic3.is.ed.ac.uk
as the license manager name, it’s actually three server names separated by colons.
Using  the  license  server  means  the  codes  will  be  updated  by  Information  Services
centrally.  Your  SPSS  copy  should  keep  functioning  without  you  having  to  do  anything.

3.   INSTALLATION  ON  A  COMPUTER  WITH  ANY  NETWORK4  CONNECTION

If you or your computing officer are installing SPSS on your computer using disks and using the license
servers under scenario 2 is an option, you will need the above authorization code from software services
for the version want to install and administration rights to the computer.
• Choose the Site License option,
• at the Product Authorization step choose License My Computer now
and enter the authorization code to get validation directly from SPSS.
NB.  You  only  need  the  network  connection  while  the  authorization  is  taking  place.

University  of  Edinburgh       SPSS  19,  20  &  21         Page  4  of  8
4.   INSTALLATION  ON  A  COMPUTER  WITHOUT  ANY  NETWORK4  CONNECTION
If the computer is not on the network at all, select the Site License option at the start of the installation.
At the Product Authorization step you should see the Lock Code for your machine
• Make a note of the generated Lock Code (which is unique to your computer) starting with either
4- or 10- and 5 digits then please email is.software.codes@ed.ac.uk with the following details:
o your name,
o university school or unit,
o version of SPSS
o Lock code
o Authorization Code.
o Payment details (i.e. when and who paid for the license.)
• Software Services team will generate a License Code6 and email it back to you.
• Once you have the License Code start up the “License Authorization Wizard”
• Choose the “I have contacted SPSS and I have a license” option and click next
• Enter the License Code and click Finish.

When you install SPSS, you get a 14 day trial of all the SPSS options available, once you validate with
the Authorization Code, you loose access to any options not under our site license. Please validate your
license before the 14 days are up as trying to validate your license after that has been known cause
problems and may delay your access to the program.

Renewing  SPSS  codes
If you have already installed the software use the Licence Authorization Wizard to update your license.
We would recommend you connect your computer to the network to authorize across the network if at all
possible. It is much quicker simpler process and less prone to errors and delays. To update the license:

1.   START  UP  THE  AUTHORIZATION  WIZARD

Either  use  the  computer’s  Start  menu  in  Windows  and  choose
Start> All Programs> IBM SPSS Statistics > IBM SPSS Statistics19 Licence Authorization Wizard
Or  For  Macintosh  open  the  Wizard  in  the  Installation  folder,  the  default  location  is:
/Applications/IBM/SPSS/Statistics/19/SPSS Statistics License Authorization Wizard
Opening the authorization wizard should show a list of the existing licensed modules and their current
expiry date.
Click  Next  after  inspecting  the  license  summary

2.   ENTERING  THE  AUTHORIZATION  CODE  IN  THE  AUTHORIZATION  WIZARD

Either  A.  update  license  while  connected  to  the  network
• Select License my product now at the Product Authorization step and click Next
• Enter Authorization Code in the Enter Code box and click Next
(it then connects with the SPSS server to verify the code)
• Then once verified click Finish
Or  B.  update  license  without  any  network  connection
B1.  a  lock  code
• Make a note of the Lock Code5 at the bottom of the Product Authorization step.
B2.  Send  your  Lock  Code  and  details  to  IS  software  codes
• please email the Lock Code to is.software.codes@ed.ac.uk with the following details:
o your name,
o university school or unit,
o version of SPSS
o Lock code
o Authorization Code.
o Payment details (i.e. when and who paid for the license.)
• Software Services team will generate a License Code6 and email it back to you.
B3.  Enter  the  license  code  in  the  authorization  wizard
• Start up the License Authorization Wizard, as detailed on the previous page, once you
have the License Code
• Enter the long License Code in the Enter Code box and click Next
• then click Finish
You should now be able to use SPSS.

5
The Lock code is unique to the computer and the SPSS version that generated it. Lock codes start with either 4- or 10- and
are followed by 5 digits and look like: 4-22222.
6
License Codes should be generated and sent out within 2 or 3 working days of receipt during the semester, it may take longer
during vacation times. Codes will only be generated if we have the required details including payment.

Checking  the  license
You can see what license modules are installed and when they expire by running the SPSS command
SHOW LICENSE. or abbreviated to SHOW LIC. Use the following steps to run the command:
• Start up SPSS.
• Choose File > New > Syntax from the File menu to open a new SPSS syntax
window.
• Type in the command SHOW LIC. into the syntax window (including the full stop).
• Select the whole command, including the full stop.
• Choose Run > All from the menu.

The output window should contain a table similar to the one below. Not all these modules will be
available under different operating systems.
