Please calculate the following values before you start solving the paper. You may need
these values during next 06 hours to solve different questions:
(i) 𝑨 = 𝐶1 + 𝐶2
where,
𝐶1 = add all digits of your Batch e.g. 2+0+1+5 = 8 (If you are from 2015 Batch)
𝐶2 = add all digits of your Roll Number e.g. 0+4+8 = 12 (If your Roll Number is 048)
(ii) 𝑩 = 𝐶3
where,
𝐶3 = add all digits of your Date of Birth e.g. 0+6+0+8+2+0+0+0 = 16
(Date of Birth: 6th August 2000)
Q.No.1 (CLO_1): (Cognitive Level C3, i.e., Apply) (PLO_1: Engineering Knowledge) (10 Marks)
(a) Suppose a rectangular function 𝑥(𝑡) with height & width of length A and it is shifted unit
advance. How do you think the signal will look like? Produce its equation and diagram.
How will it affect the amplitude and width of 𝑥(𝑡) if you multiply it with a unit step
function 𝑢(𝑡 + 𝐴)?[Don’t forget to use the value of A as defined in Instructions].
Show all steps. (5 marks)
(b) If the even and odd symmetric parts of a nonsymmetric signal are defined as,
𝐶 𝐶
𝑔𝑒 (𝑛) = [ , 2𝐶, ]
2 2
𝐶 𝐶
𝑔𝑜 (𝑛) = [− , 0, ]
2 2
Don’t forget to use the value of C as defined in Instructions. How can you relate the
original nonsymmetric signal from its even and odd symmetric parts? (5 marks)
Q.No.2 (CLO_2): (Cognitive Level C3, i.e., Apply) (PLO_2: Problem Analysis) (10 Marks)
(a) Consider the non-linear system described by the input – output equation as 𝑦(𝑛) =
𝑦 2 (𝑛 − 1) + 𝑥(𝑛). As an input sequence we select the bounded signal 𝑥(𝑛) = 𝐵𝛿(𝑛)
[Don’t forget to use the value of B, as defined in Instructions]. Now compute from the
given data whether the system is stable or not? (5 marks)
Q.No.3 (CLO_3): (Cognitive Level C3, i.e., Apply) (PLO_4: Investigation) (10 Marks)
(a) Consider a signal shown in figure 2 (a). Apply the Fourier series operation and compute
the resultant first five coefficients [Don’t forget to use the value of A, as described in
instruction]. If we keep finite number of Fourier series coefficients, demonstrate why

the Fourier synthesis will suffer from Gibbs effect (a jumpy distortion)? Increase the
number of harmonics to infinite and predict what happens to similar distortion. Does it
disappear or not? In case yes, what could be the possible reason? Changing the limits of
Fourier series optimal coefficients 𝑎𝑛 and 𝑏𝑛 can help. (6 marks)

(a)
(b) Construct the line spectrum of above signal (given in part a) using trigonometric Fourier
series (𝑎𝑜 , 𝑎𝑛 , 𝑏𝑛 ) and exponential Fourier series (𝑎𝑘 ). Both plots are different in term
of shape, time period and magnitude, can you show that both line spectrum convey the
same information. (4 marks)
Q.No.4 (CLO_3): (Cognitive Level C3, i.e., Apply) (PLO_4: Investigation) (10 Marks)
(a) Compute the Fourier transform of the given function x(t) by using suitable property of
Fourier transform. [Don’t forget to use the value of A and B as defined in instructions].
(5 marks)

(b) If 𝑥(𝑡) is same as in above part ‘a’, and ℎ(𝑡) = 𝐴𝛿(𝑡) , compute 𝑦(𝑡) using appropriate
property of Fourier transform. Can you relate 𝑥(𝑡) with 𝑦(𝑡)? (5 marks)
Q.No.5 (CLO_3): (Cognitive Level C3, i.e., Apply) (PLO_4: Investigation) (10 Marks)
(a) Solve the given equation using Laplace transform and show its pole-zero location, and
associated ROC for the mentioned time functions. [Don’t forget to use the values of A
and B as defined in Instructions]. (5 marks)
𝑡 𝑡
𝑥(𝑡) = 3𝑒 𝐴 𝑢(𝑡) − 4𝑒 𝐵 𝑢(−𝑡)
(b) Apply inverse Laplace transform for system output 𝑦(𝑡) of an LTI system if,

𝑌(𝑠) =
1
𝑠 2 (𝑠 + 𝐵 )
