ABSTRACT
An Intersection is the most complex location on any highway, where two or more roadways
join or cross each other; it facilitates orderly movement of traffic for a particular area. The
number of facility per year is steadily increasing as the number of vehicles on the road. A
well-functioning road-transport system is vital to the well-being and prosperity of any
country. In recent years, the intense growth of vehicles has caused heavier traffic congestions
on the roads and intersections, which are even worse during the traffic peak time. An
intersection which is not well designed, will not only increase the travel time of the vehicles
but also cause more traffic accidents. Road surface deterioration is also serious problem
occurs within intersection area due to many factors such as frequent start-stop and slow speed
of vehicles. Hence, it is necessary to do the intersection design more accurately according to
present condition. The basic principles considered for the design includes the principles of
Uniformity and Simplicity, Minimize Conflict Points, and Alignment and Profile. In this
study detailed survey of the study area was conducted using Dumpy level and peak hour
traffic volume was estimated through traffic volume survey. It also deals with analyses and
redesigning of M.S. Palya which is a five legged intersection with mixed traffic condition
located in Bangalore. From the study, signal design has also been done for the stretch.
