EX:NO : 4 ANALYSIS AND DESIGN OF PLANE TRUSS

DATE :

AIM :

To analyse and design the plane truss using STRAP Software.

PROCEDURE :

1. Start The STRAP Software.

2. File → New Model → Type The Title → Ok

3. UNIT INPUTS
Select Metre And KiloNewton
a. Units = Meter And KiloNewton
b. Select A Method For Creating Model As MODEL WIZARD

4. MODEL CREATION:
a. Select a method for creating model as MODEL WIZARD → TRUSS
ON COLUMNS
b. Enter the dimensions /specifications of the truss model
c. And then select reference section for BOTTOM CHORD creation

d. From the STEEL TABLE icon select a suitable section for bottom
chord Then select bottom chord member dimension from the selection
window
e. Choose the E - value for the material and assign the orientation of the
members from the PROPERTIES DIALOG BOX

f. And then click on OK for bottom chord

g. The choice of section ,orientation and material constants for top chord
member is repeated same as that done for BOTTOM CHORD creation.

5. VERTICAL MEMBER ASSIGNATION PROCEDURE

a. The select a reference for VERTICAL MEMBER CREATION

b. From that select a STEEL TABLE icon and then select a type of
vertical members
Then select a size of vertical members by selecting the sizes given
in selection type of window.

c. And then assign the sections through PROPERTIES DIALOG BOX

d. And then click on OK for bottom chord

e. The procedure done for vertical member creation, orientation and material
constant is repeated for creation of diagonal members.
f. Following the creation and selection of members for top chord, bottom
chord, vertical and diagonal members the member specifications and
property assigning procedure is carried out for columns which is a
structural member by choosing a hot rolled I section ISMB 250 .
6. LOADS DEFINITION:
a. The values for dead load, live load and weightage factor for the truss
model is given in the VERICAL LOAD dialog box ( The direction of
the loads can be reversed by assigning negative sign to the load values)
b. Then wind loads are assigned for the model as per the codal
recommendations and the location the structure. The suction pressure( -ve
wind pressure) may be introduced when there is no proper arrangement for
air circulation inside the building. The values of the wind loads are entered
in the WIND LOADS dialog box .

LOAD COMBINATIONS:
c. The factors of load for the analysis and design of the truss are provided in
COMBINATION FACTORS dialog box .
d. Then GUI will open with the created truss model

e. Then the value of BOTTOM CAMBER is given zero to merge the

center line with baseline of the truss and the no.of panels is decreased to
3 in the dimensions dialog box

7. BEAM PROPERTY ASSIGNATION PROCEDURE :

a. Select the BEAM icon

b. Select the PROP icon

c. Select the undefined beam properties dialog box.
d. Click on ASSIGN and select the INDIVIDUAL BEAM &
COLUMN from beam selection dialog box.
8. MOMENT RELEASE PROCEDURE :
a. To get Back To Main Menu Click The Main Menu Icon.

b. Select The BEAM Icon

c. Select RELEASE icon for property assignation.

d. Click on individual beam in BEAM SELECTION BOX .

e. Select the individual beams such as top AND bottom CHORD

members which are connected with the supports and then select
SELECTED BEAM END icon in the dialog box.
9. SOLVING PROCEDURE :

a. Select the solve icon and click the OK from matrix modal
dialog box .

10. RECULT DISPLAY PROCEDURE

a. Click on draw icon and click the OK .
b. Click On Draw Icon And Select the Bending Moment Result of the
selected beam → Click On Single Beam Icon → Screen → Click the
required load combination.
11. POST PROCESSING:
a. Click on the steel post processing icon and then select Indian steel
table for design of members.
b. CREATION OF GROUP:

Select the section table icon and select the new sections group. To
select the type and section click ok based on availability of the sections in
the market.
Section Table->Define a new sections group->Group title->Add all
sections->click ok
c. PARAMETERS DEFINITON:
Select the define parameter icon and assign all the parameters.

d. GROUP DEFINITION:
The properties of the section re assigned to the selected members by
selecting the section specification option and the individual beams are
selected for assigning the default parameters to the members.
e. The identical beams of same section and properties are selected by
choosing identical beams dialog box.

f. SECTION ORIENTATION:
To change the orientation of the the major and minor axis of the section

icon is selected and the orientation can be modified by the designer

The modified orientation can be checked by selecting the REDRAW
option in the toolbar.
g. TIE MEMBERS ASSIGNATION:
To reduce the chances of buckling of the member along the minor axis the

tie members are assigned to the supports by selecting the support icon
and the restraints are removed in all the directions except minor axis in
which the web of the sections are restrained from buckling by means of
introduction of the tie members in it .
The tie members are introduced in the column at their middle heights in order to
reduce the effective length of the columns to avoid its buckling along minor axis.

h. RESULTS DISPLAY PROCEDURE:

Select the compute icon and finish the result

Display->General arrangement drawing->Select the default display
paramaeters->Copy to clipboard->Print .

Result:

Thus the given plane truss has been analyzed and designed using STRAP Software
