Tutorial 2 Week 2

Course: CEB706 – Designed of Reinforced & Pre-Cast Concrete Structures

Tutorial: 02 – Module 2
3
Assume the specific weight of the reinforced concrete as 24 kN/m

Q1:
Using AS3600, determine the 30 year design creep coefficient for a beam constructed from
40 MPa concrete in a near coastal area in Darwin. Assume that the beam has a hypothetical
thickness of 200 mm and is loaded after 28 days.

Q2:
Determine minimum cover and grade of concrete required for a reinforced concrete
member under following conditions; (consider standard formwork and compaction are used
for construction)
nd
i. Non-industrial building 2 floor exterior wall constructed in Toowoomba
nd
ii. Non-industrial building 2 floor exterior wall constructed in Darwin (15 km from
coastal)
nd
iii. Non-industrial building 2 floor exterior wall constructed in Sydney Harbour
nd
iv. 2 Floor office building floor constructed in Toowoomba
v. Car park subjected to light vehicles (up to 3 t gross mass) in an area classified as
A1 exposure condition

Q3:
Complete the following table according to AS3600.
Fire resistance Minimum
Concrete member Width (mm)
period (min) cover (mm)
Simply supported beams 60
Continuous beams 90

Q4:
Complete the following table according to AS3600.
Fire
Effective Minimum
resistance
Concrete member thickness cover
period
(mm) (mm)
(min)
Simply supported one-way
90
reinforced concrete slab
One-way continuous slabs 90

Q5:
A continuous reinforced concrete beam with rectangular cross section of 150x450 mm
throughout the span of 5000 mm is constructed as an interior beam in a residential building at
Toowoomba. The beam is subjected to a uniformly distributed superimposed dead load and
superimposed live loads of 1.8 kN/m and 6.0 kN/m respectively.
i. What is the minimum grade of concrete and cover to satisfy the durability
condition according to AS3600?
ii. Check the adequacy of the section for fire resistance for 90 min.
iii. Calculate the design load for strength limit state (fdesign=1.2g+1.5q)
