Tutorial 7 Week 7

Course: CEB706 – Designed of Reinforced & Pre-Cast Concrete Structures

Tutorial: 7 – Module 4

NOTE:
Use the simplified rectangular stress block (AS3600) for all questions.
Following data should be use for all questions unless otherwise stated
 Specific weight of the reinforced concrete is 24 kN/m3
  N type bars (fsy = 500 MPa) for tension and compression reinforcement
 R type bars (fsy = 250 MPa) for shear reinforcement

Q1:
A rectangular slab of 160 mm thick is supported on all four sides as shown in figure. The slab
is made of Grade 25 concrete and is subjected to a live load of 4 kPa. Assume cover of
25 mm.

1. If the above slab is simply supported only on its short edges,

a. Determine the total and incremental deflections and check whether these
deflection values are below the limits given in AS3600.
b. Design this slab for bending and check whether the deflections limits are
satisfied.
2. If the above slab is supported on all four edges,
a. Determine the total and incremental deflections and check whether these
deflection values are below the limits given in AS3600.
b. Design this slab for bending and check whether the deflections limits are
satisfied.

Assume that ψs = 0.7 and ψl = 0.4 and N12 bars for tensile reinforcement.

Q2:
An office floor system is shown below. It is supported by stiff beams of 400 mm wide whose
centrelines are shown as grid. The slab and beams are monolithically constructed using Grade
25 concrete. The slab needs to design for a superimposed dead load of 0.5 kPa live load of 3
kPa. Assume cover of 25 mm.

i. Determine appropriate thickness for the slab to satisfy the serviceability limit state
as AS3600. Assume that ψs = 0.7 and ψl = 0.4.
ii. Design this slab for bending
iii. Check whether the slab reinforcement is adequate for shear.
