CHAPTER I

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Reading is the art of interpreting printed and written words. It is basic tool of education

and one of the most important skills in everyday life. We live in a world of printed words.

Through reading we acquire new ideas, obtain needed information, and broaden our interests. All

of these achievements can lead to a happier, more successful life (The World Book encyclopedia,

1961).

Reading plays an important role in most everything we do. It is one of the most

important skills that a person can acquire. Through teaching and reading material an individual

becomes aware of the issue that affect life. A person acquires new experiences if he knows how

to read and understands what he reads. This is a skill that should be developed by students for

their own benefit.

According to Alcantara (1996), the concept of reading embraces the following: Health

competence includes good health; good vision and hearing, motor coordination, and hand

domination. In the school competence the child should have language facility, have a large

vocabulary, possess long attention span, have desires to read, able to follow directions, be able to

answer question, show that he enjoys group games, have the readiness for left to right

progression, and be able to finish the task.

On the other hand, Santos (2002) said that the ultimate goal of the act of reading is

total comprehension. This requires the integration of several or all sub - skills into a unitary skill

during reading. Such integration is not achieved through practice and separate skills using

unrelated passages. Rather integration is achieved by reacting to the authentic and real reading
materials at different level comprehension, literal, interpretative, evaluate, critical and creative

levels.

Thus, she added, the ultimate goal of reading instruction is to develop efficient readers who love

to read and use reading for variety of purposes all their lives. This kind of reading instruction

must be done at all levels of the academic program starting from pre-school.

Villamin (2001) enumerated the following factors that affect reading progress: cerebral

dominance, directional orientation, maturation, intelligence, visual and auditory officiency,

language proficiency, perception and conceptualization, listening comprehension, personality

and emotional factors, environmental factors, socio-economic status, mobility education and

attitudes of parents, home condition, some school variables and general conditions.

Johnson (1999) further stated that the inability to read by a large proportion of the

population of a country points to under-development since reading, writing and arithmetic

constitute the founding of elementary education.

Bangkole (1999) believes that if children have the kind of childhood exposure, they

were exposed to in other areas, to books and reading, the conviction that reading as a habit will

be impressed on their mind. According to him, his impressions once established does not die

easily. The reading habit is learnt, natured and cemented in the school environment. A good

school should from the habit of providing the pupils with things to read whether they are books,

inscription or toys.
CHAPTER II

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

This study was conducted to help the people who do not learn to read often have one or

more of the following symptoms: below grade level reading achievements, slow reading, poor

comprehension.
CHAPTER III

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

This study sought to determine the factors that cause the poor reading performance of

Grade VI pupils in Upper Landing Elementary School.

Specifically, it sought to answer the following questions:

1. What are the factors that cause the poor reading performance of Grade VI pupils in Upper

Landing Elementary School?

2. Why this student has poor reading performance?

Data Analysis

The data gathered were tabulated and analyzed after conducting the investigation proper.

The researchers analyzed the factors that cause the poor reading performance of Grade VI pupils

in Upper Landing Elementary School.

CHAPTER V

EVALUATION

As to the frequency of reading, 13 or 65 percent read sometime, 3 or 15 percent read

weekly, 1 or 5 percent read monthly and 3 or 1 45 percent read daily.

Based on the data gathered, it is very clear that the main reading materials read by Grade

VI pupils are school books but these books were only read by them sometimes.
CONCLUSION

The study reaffirms existing studies that environmental factors such as lack of reading

materials and lack of time to practice reading that greatly affects the reading performances of the

pupils.

`
RECOMMENDATION

This investigation however recommend further studies be conducted for effective

measures that the school use to provide pupils with the right kind of exposure with the

conviction that reading is a habit that will be impressed in their minds.
