respect when we start placing them - they are heavier
than many larger speakers. The design is solid indeed,
but the AE has its own ways of adding weight ...

Our last meeting with Acoustic Energy took place over 5 years ago, it was a test of the AE305, loudspeakers at a similar price
(then) as the Acoustic Energy AE309 , slightly larger, but the same characteristic for the company: based on 15-cm mid-
woofers, with aluminum membranes.
Currently, all AE designs use this size woofers. Only from the distant past I remember the three-way AE system with a larger 20-
cm woofer (AE3), but the smaller drivers were the essence of those designs that brought the AE the greatest success and
recognition.
So we start with the story, which is probably justified after such a long break in contacts with AE, especially since not only the
offer has changed, but also the owner. The company was founded in 1987, its first model was the inconspicuous AE1 monitor,
but it became a sensation - it was one of the first constructions in the world with a metal mid-range diaphragm, which remained
in the AE technique and image for a long time.
In 1994, the company found an "overseas investor" whose finances and production capabilities allowed it to launch the
production of cheaper models, as well as to enter the market of new generation devices - Bluetooth speakers. Great, but
another success is being presented as AE's "liberation" from these dependencies (including opportunities) and the takeover
"back" by the British themselves, which took place two years ago.
It is also probably a return to the former position of a specialist in conventional mid-range loudspeakers, although the offer also
includes glimpses of modernity addressed to a less demanding customer - the Aego series with two systems: sub-sat and
soundbar-sub. And also, and this is a serious proposition in audiophile (as well as professional, studio users) terms, active AE1
monitors, clearly referring to the first AE1. Also to the 300 series - they are very similar to the AE300.
Acoustic Energy and speakers

The basic offer, however, consists of constructions in general as we know them ... for almost 40 years. Their technique and
aesthetics are at a higher level, but experts recognize the company's style, at least in the 100 and 300 series; only in the newest
and most expensive 500 series, completely new and slightly surprising elements were introduced: instead of metal membranes,
there are carbon fiber braids, attention - not only in the mid-woofer, but also in the tweeter.

The housings of the tested units were finished with natural walnut veneer; There are also high-gloss lacquered versions - white and black.
In the cheapest 100 series, there are also no aluminum membranes, there are cellulose woofers and textile dome tweeters. Now
we look at the "middle" 300 series, which best represents the traditional (although still refined) Acoustic Energy technique.
Interestingly, this series appeared later than the 100 series, and its designs are in a sense a refinement of the cheaper
counterparts, although based on the "original" proprietary technology.
The 15-cm mid-woofer with an aluminum diaphragm (black anodized), a characteristic, conical dust cap and foam suspension
appeared almost 40 years ago and looks almost identical to today (an exceptional situation even in the fairly stable world of
speaker technology).
The manufacturer declares that in many elements it is a new speaker, better than the previous ones, and there is no reason to
question it - the diaphragm itself is supposed to be "sandwich, aluminum-ceramic", but maybe it's a piece of cake, don't worry ...
The foam suspension 30 years ago seemed an anachronism, largely due to its aging, so most manufacturers replaced it with a
more durable rubber suspension. However, "foam" appears again, firstly due to its acoustic properties (lower loss) and the
introduction of modifications that increase its durability.
The one-inch aluminum dome tweeter "in itself" is quite conventional, the manufacturer emphasizes the importance of profiling
the front around it, which is currently used in many designs, and leads to the similarity of the directional characteristics of the
tweeter and the low-midrange (or midrange) in terms of crossover frequency, about which AE recalls.
However, this is done by narrowing the scattering from the tweeter (in this range), so naming this element (each manufacturer
comes up with its own name ...) "Wide Dispersion Technology" is not accurate; not always wider is better.

The AE309, although slim, does not have a pedestal, but their stability is ensured by weighting down at the bottom of the housing. At the top, the side edges
are rounded, at the bottom - the front and back.
In the 300 series only two "universal" models were prepared - the bookshelf AE300, the floor standing AE309, the central AE307
and the AE308 subwoofer. The AE309 is a two-and-a-half way system, with a typical arrangement, all the speakers are placed
close to each other, the tweeter is at the highest level, and it is still quite low, because the whole structure is only 90 cm high.
With a width of 17.5 cm, however, it is very slim and it would not be difficult to throw it off balance, hence at first glance the lack
of a stabilizing plinth is a bit surprising (although it is not needed for a more elegant look - Acoustic Energy AE309 looks
modern and delicate).
Acoustic Energy AE309 is sufficiently stable due to the very low center of gravity, which is the effect of filling the lower part of
the housing (a special chamber) with ballast.
The manufacturer does not declare with what material exactly, promising with the use of spikes the elimination of housing
resonances. This is also an old AE custom - maybe it is not used in all designs, but just when I remembered some old AE with
such a solution, I guessed that the surprisingly high mass of Acoustic Energy AE309 is not only due to thick walls and large
magnets ...

The slotted bass-reflex port looks interesting, but its location on the edge of the cabinet causes the transmission of a standing wave resonance at approx.
200 Hz.
And then I found confirmation of these guesses in the company materials. It also follows that the loudspeakers themselves did
not need the volume characteristics of the entire cabinet to establish the optimal characteristics.
Both 15s work in a common chamber with a bass-reflex resonant circuit; the tunnel is a 14 cm x 2.5 cm slot with a depth of 10
cm, with a profiled exit at the back, just below the top wall.
It looks interesting, but ... the surface itself is quite typical in relation to the surface of the membranes and the probable
volumetric deflection of a pair of 15s, the shape of the hole cross-section does not significantly affect tuning, but placing it on
the very edge of the housing is quite risky - there are waves standing ones, formed in the housing, have "arrows" and you can
clearly see them on the pressure characteristic from the hole, so you can also hear ...
Acoustic Energy AE309 - housing

The aesthetics of the Acoustic Energy AE309 housing combines minimalism with refinement. The roughly rectangular shape
has some original rounded edges, so that at the top there are connections with the sides, and at the bottom - with the front and
back walls. It's a small thing, but it pleases (the eye, it doesn't have any acoustic influence, such could be the rounding of the
edge of the front panel near the speakers).
The bezel frame is thin, it has a positive effect on the sound, held by magnets; all speaker mounts are covered with decorative
rings. There are three color versions available - high gloss lacquered black and white and veneered with natural walnut veneer.
The latter appeared in the test.

Listening
We have had so many meetings with Acoustic Energy on our account that their old sound was remembered, also due to the fact
that it was not trivial. This memory, however, did not define my initial expectations towards the Acoustic Energy AE309 ,
because when I sat down in front of them, it was still locked in some "box". This one, however, opened quickly ... This is real -
spicy - Acoustic Energy.
Lovers of this style and climate, and there was a great crowd of them, have what they like. Important details of the appearance
of the AE309 could have hinted that, but these characteristic technical elements would not have to determine the sound.
In the profile it represents, it depends much more on other characteristics and the constructor's decisions. The company could
refer to tradition with specific, visible details, and at the same time modernize the aesthetics (which it did), as well as
implement even a new sound concept, adjusted to perhaps new requirements, trends ...

The AE woofers look just like thirty years ago - aluminum diaphragms, conical central part, foam suspension.
Many companies have followed this path, especially those that previously offered strong, expressive sound, but too
controversial to be accepted all over the world. Subsequent recordings confirmed my belief that the Acoustic Energy AE309 is a
faithful continuation of the AE from 20 years ago, but when I calmly reviewed the previous tests, I remembered that it was not
always the same and it was not always pink. The AE profile emphasized low tones, sometimes their advantage weighed down
and darkened the whole picture. This is definitely not the case with the AE309.
This is one of the better implementations of the company's style, where we have a hard bass hit, but without heaviness or
subduing the treble.
The treble does not have such a share in the whole presentation as the bass, it is rather a complement, but proportional to the
midrange tones , and these, in turn, cannot be dominated by low frequencies, defend themselves well, and even attack with
expressive articulation.
The bass is typical for AE with strength and character - it is the opposite of soft abundance, there are no lowest components in
it, instead it emphasizes "medium" or maybe "higher" bass and emphasized rhythmic qualities. Contours are not shown
perfectly, nuances blend into thicker sounds, but the energy emanating from there is more important.
This is a dynamic bass, "turning up", giving strength to the music - and although not everyone needs such support, many pieces
gained not only vigor, but also authority in the AE309's performance. Then the small Acoustic Energy AE309 appears as a
strong competitor, able to amplify even a large living room and introduce us to the world of musical emotions, usually provided
by larger structures.

Also the tweeter dome is made of aluminum, covered with a mesh, but today it is a common practice of many manufacturers - it is equipped with a profiled
front.
Znaczenie basu w prezentacji Acoustic Energy AE309 potwierdziły porównania z pozostałymi kolumnami tego testu – nawet
największe Wharfedale nie dawały takiego "bitu". A przy tak ustawionej charakterystyce czytelność zakresu średnio-
wysokotonowego jest wyśmienita.
Dźwięk w całym pasmie jest mocny i selektywny, gęsty, spójny, skoncentrowany, konkretny "w ogóle i w szczególe". Jego
twardość nie jest przymilna, ale procentuje wrażeniem dokładności i dyscypliny; to dźwięk najbardziej neutralny, "męski" i
"profesjonalny".
Z dobrym źródłem i wzmacniaczem dźwięk ten może nabrać klasy i specyfiki słyszanej ze znacznie droższych kolumn. Nie
zawsze jest przyjemniutki, często dobitny i bezpośredni, ze średnicą niepodgrzaną i komunikatywną, górą rozdzielczą i
skrupulatną.
Scena jest uporządkowana, dość ściśle zagospodarowana, bez efektownego pogłębiania czy poszerzania, trzymająca
lokalizacje stabilnie. Mocny, krzepki dźwięk, typowy dla AE, wyróżniający się dynamiką w całej testowanej grupie. Pewniak dla
miłośników AE, dla innych może być odkryciem.

Często jest tak, że w teście odsłuchowym kolumna prezentuje się jako dobrze zrównoważona, ewentualnie z lekko wyczuwalnymi
mankamentami charakterystyki (chociaż nie wszystkie odejścia od liniowości należy oceniać jako wady), a w laboratorium okazuje się bardzo
"urozmaicona", nie tylko drobnymi nierównomiernościami (których nasz słuch nie jest w stanie lokalizować na materiale muzycznym), ale
czasami szerokimi i głębokimi.
Można analizować i objaśniać wiele wariantów takich "fenomenów", tym razem sytuacja jest szczególnie ciekawa, bowiem zmierzona
charakterystyka okazuje się "z grubsza" wyrównana, podczas gdy w sesji odsłuchowej odczuwałem wyjątkową siłę "średniego" basu, a kolumny
stały daleko od ściany. Zwykle nawet przy wyeksponowaniu (widocznym w pomiarach) niskich częstotliwości, w odsłuchu nie słychać tego tak
wyraźnie, jak teraz, gdy charakterystyka wcale na to nie wskazuje.
Co jest tego powodem, pozostaje dla mnie tajemnicą, tym bardziej, że inne pomiary, których tutaj już nie przedstawiamy, wskazują na dobrą
odpowiedź impulsową (mimo że jest to bas-refleks, to z tych lepiej "kontrolowanych"), więc również niewidoczne na charakterystyce
przetwarzania "przeciąganie" basu nie jest źródłem jego obfitości; zresztą słychać, że bas jest twardy, z czym wreszcie może mieć związek
rezonans obudowy przy 200 Hz (widoczny w pomiarze ciśnienia z samego bas-refleksu).
Charakterystyka z osi głównej mieści się w ścieżce +/-3 dB, a w jeszcze węższej +/-2,5 dB – na osi -7°; oś główna naszego pomiaru nie
pokrywała się z "konstrukcyjną" osią główną, która leży na wysokości ok. 80 cm, i właśnie pod kątem -7° zbliżyliśmy się do niej, stąd najlepszy
rezultat na tym kierunku, a teoretycznie najsłabszy – pod kątem +7° (w górę), gdzie pojawia się już wyraźne osłabienie w zakresie 2–4 kHz.
Wskazówki praktyczne z tym związane nie są jednoznaczne; jeżeli chcemy usłyszeć dźwięk jak najbliższy liniowemu, siedźmy nisko lub daleko
(to zmniejsza kąt), a jeżeli siedzimy blisko i wysoko, pochylmy kolumny delikatnie do tyłu; sprowadza się to do warunku, aby znajdować się w
pobliżu osi głośnika wysokotonowego. Jednak biorąc pod uwagę, że i średnica potrafi z AE309 wybrzmieć twardo i dobitnie, lekkie osłabienie w
zakresie 2–4 kHz nie musi mieć wpływu negatywnego, co trzeba sprawdzić samemu i dopasować ustawienie do własnego gustu.
Maskownica jest akustycznie idealna – niemal w ogóle nie zmienia charakterystyki. Producent deklaruje utrzymanie w ścieżce +/-3 dB pasma
38 Hz – 30 kHz; w naszych pomiarach tak wyznaczona dolna granica wynosi 40 Hz, a spadek -6 dB względem poziomu średniego zostaje
odnotowany przy ok. 36 Hz. Czułość wynosi 84 dB – to wynik raczej umiarkowany i znacznie niższy, niż obiecuje producent (89 dB), ale dobrym
usprawiedliwieniem jest dość wysoka impedancja.
Minimum przy 170 Hz wynosi 6 Ω, co oczywiście pozwala zakwalifikować taką wartość jako znamionową, a niewiele brakuje, aby można było
przyznać nawet 8 Ω (wedle dawnych norm, które stosujemy, impedancja ma "prawo" obniżyć się o 20% względem zadeklarowanej impedancji
znamionowej). Tutaj producent nic a nic nie naciąga i podaje impedancję 6 Ω. Z taką kombinacją czułości i impedancji, AE309 jest przykładem
konstrukcji, która będzie rodziła typowe nieporozumienia dotyczące wymagań względem wzmacniacza.
Prawdopodobnie będzie uchodziła za "trudne obciążenie", wymagające "wydajności prądowej" itp., bowiem podłączona do każdego
wzmacniacza będzie po prostu grała ciszej (niż wiele innych kolumn). Tym razem jednak potrzebny jest nie specjalny prąd, ale wysoka moc
wzmacniacza już przy wysokiej impedancji (a więc raczej napięcie...), o ile zależy nam na głośnym graniu – teoretycznie AE309 może przyjąć
175 W (taka jest podawana moc znamionowa). Nie jest ona jednak wcale potrzebna, aby zapewnić dobrą kontrolę basu.
Na charakterystyce impedancji widać wysokie szczyty, z którymi będą się wiązać duże kąty fazowe – nie wszystkie wzmacniacze to lubią, ale
zwykle nawet im sprawia to kłopot dopiero wtedy, gdy wiąże się z głębokimi minimami impedancji w pobliżu.

Wraz z najnowszą serią konstrukcji, Focal wprowadza też zupełnie

nowy materiał membran. Nie jest to sensacją, bowiem największy
francuski producent zespołów głośnikowych już od dawna jest w
tej dziedzinie wyjątkowo aktywny, budując renomę marki w dużym
stopniu właśnie na innowacyjności i oryginalności własnych
rozwiązań. Jednak nawet Focal nowych membran nie wprowadza
corocznie, więc Chora i Slatefiber wyznaczają ważny etap w
historii.
