Site survey Introduction: In this survey I’ll be having a clearer look at the area where my client will be putting her product.
The area shown is a little congested, so I’ll try my best to make my product according to this area’s dimensions.

This picture represents the measurements of the side area and the dressing table. My
product must be smaller than 27 inches if I need to fix it on the wall or else should be
small enough to cover up little area on the 43” table with width of 15”. The
maximum measurements are should be up is 15” length with 7” width, so that other
things can also be placed on the dressing table besides the jewelry organizer.
Summary: After observing her room’s environment, I’ve reached my conclusions about where possibly can I place my end
product. I’ll have to make my end product up to the room’s measurements I’ve taken. Completing this page gave a very
strong impact on me as a designer for the product and gave me more ideas to design my product according to the limitations
of the space and the specified possibilities.

this I will be able to understand the types of existing products available in the market. I may get across some ideas that’ll influence my
end product. I’ll get to know about the products that are more appealing to the people and are liked by them the most. I’ll be choosing
such products that matches all the specifications shown in my client profile, design brief and client discussion. Also, by completing this
page, I’ll be more focused towards how my product can be different from the existing ones.
(Secondary research)
This product has been constructed of MDF (medium-density
fiber) and glass with velvet lined interior. It is a wall mounted
organizer that costs up to PKR 12,407. The mirror opens up to
reveal convenient and versatile interior jewelry storage that is
suitable for all of your necklaces, earrings, bracelets, and
more. It has maximum 8 hooks inside to hang large
necklaces. It has trays that are adjustable and more trays can
be added if needed. Its color gives it a more elegant look.
Moreover, it can be hung on a door’s backside in our room. I
think this unit can be suitable for my client despite its color
because it is able to store large number of accessories.
This product costs PKR 24,750 and
is made out MDF, however, some
parts used consists of aluminum and

this box, there are three further sections that can be
used to store different sorts of accessories such as
necklaces, rings and earrings. It is a small ordinary
box that can be kept in out our bags while travelling.
Summary: By completing this I have found out that some existing products in the market do fulfil my client needs but
are too expensive. I’ve understood that I need to make a project according to my client’s needs. Additionally, idea number 2
has inspired me more with its idea of storing earrings. Moreover, the idea of hanging them on the door is a little more
impressive than others. Also. I have seen that most of the products have been made by MDF that is a manmade wood easily
available in markets.

Anthropometric measurements for the final design
Introduction: I intend to carry out measurements in order to ensure that the size of the unit is made according to my target audience. I will look at the average anthropometric
measurement, compare them with my client and then finalize the size of my unit.
After choosing design number 3 (from initial ideas), I intend to carry out these measurements in order to ensure that my product meets my
client’s and the target audience’s requirements. I have taken measurements for the height in order to see at what point is it supposed to be
hung or placed.

Velvet is a rich fabric that comes in range of colors, with different textures and is used for clothing,
upholstery and interior design applications. Velvet fabric will be used in my unit for lining purposes,
which features a plush nap, has a soft and smooth surface that will protect the jewelry items from the
rough wood. A velvet liner will also give the storage space an elegant look. If the velvet liner gets
dusty or dirty, you can clean it with a few simple techniques, such as the fabric has a pile, or raised
surface, so velvet should be cleaned by hand.
It costs up to PKR 300-400 per meter.

Stainless steel hinges are available with a huge variety of surface finishes. They offer an
aesthetically pleasing appearance of high quality and it is easy to maintain the high level of shine.
In addition, stainless steel is easy to clean. Its durability and low maintenance make stainless steel
an affordable choice. Moreover, stainless steel hinges have a significantly higher resistance to rust
and corrosion against many man-made and natural environments.
A stainless-steel narrow hinge costs up to PKR 15 or 18.

Prototype modelling and Introduction: In this particular process, I will be creating a prototype made out of cardboard mainly.
This will be the model made 1/3rd of the actual size of the unit. This will allow me to see what my unit
looks like in physically.
Testing
Summary: This prototype modelling helped me to test my finalized idea more properly. This allowed me to critically observe any problems that I
may face while the constructing process. I made this prototype using cardboard, duct tape and hot glue mainly, including other cutting tools.

Production plan Introduction: In this page, I planned out all the aspects before its production as the next
process, I wrote the main time-consuming things and set up a manufacturing time I’ll need.
Cut down the marked pieces carefully using a circular saw. Make sure to use the wood pieces had been adjusted correctly by the
help of a G-clamp.
Smoothen the side of the pieces using a hand sand machine. Make sure to draw a line till where you have to smoothen the piece,
so that not too much is taken off.
Ensure all sides are straight and equal.

Cut the piece using a power tool miter saw. Ensure that the blade profile is intact.
Smoothen the edges. While smoothening the pieces make sure not too much is taken off.
Mark out 5 center points, using a marker. Must be distanced equally from all sides.
Using a drill machine, create small holes in to the center points marked in order to insert the hooks. Drill machine must be kept perpendicular to the surface.
Attach the wooden piece to the organizer using a strong wood glue (e.g.: PVA) Make sure the piece attached is straight.
Insert the hooks.
Drawers Mark the required measurement for each side except the base. Make sure the edges are marked straight. 2 days
For base use a separate piece of cardboard and mark the piece accordingly.
Cut the pieces marked using a circular saw and use a hack saw for the cardboard. Make sure the piece are cut straight.
Join the pieces together at first with a glue and then later with nails. Make sure the pieces are joined perpendicularly to each other.
Mark out the recess part using a scale and pencil and cut it using a coping saw. Make sure to use the saw carefully.

Conclusion: All of the compartments and drawers which I have added provide sufficient storage capacity. The unit can hold large number of necklaces and other accessories.
Moreover, everything is quite easily accessible for the client. Also, comparing my unit with the questionnaire, I see my project has many of the qualities that my target audience tends
to see in a suitable jewelry organizer. In addition, I think I have fairly reached, both my client’s and the target audience’s requirement.

Final testing and client feedback
Me and my client met and I helped her place her unit on the wall by the help of the hooks attached to the backside of the organizer, that were later fixed in to
a holder attached on the wall. Next up, we placed her accessories in the desired places. My client was very happy with the outcome as now she had a unit that
completely fulfilled her need. We both had selected a very suitable place for the unit which gave it more of a nicer look according to its surrounding as well
which was a plus point. Moreover, it looked amazing with the color of table that is placed underneath it. My client and I also had a small discussion in which
said that this unit completely covered up the space required for all the accessories. My client said that the unit holds all the accessories in place properly. He
also stated that the material was quite durable yet good looking. He said that “I can easily access all the accessories and all my storage problems are solved
and also I can keep my expensive jewelry safe and I am really content about that.”. In a nutshell, the unit I made completely fulfilled the purpose and most
importantly my client was satisfied.

Evaluation of the design
I decided to opt for making a jewelry organizer for my friend, whom I have taken as my client. She has always been complaining about how hard it
is for her to gather her accessories in multiple boxes of different sizes and shapes. She mostly loses the small boxes or the accessories inside these
boxes would get tangled. To help her with her problems, I wanted to make something innovative and fit to purpose so I decided to create this
organizer that will hold large number of accessories in one place, without anything getting tangled.
Firstly, I began by creating a task analysis along with a research plan to identify the advantages and disadvantages of each step. This allowed me
to work resourcefully and save my time as well. Next, I did a client profile which was a key step in my project as I got to know each requirement
my client needs for her unit.
The mood board along with the designer research and the questionnaire also allowed me to get more information to make my unit as suitable as
possible for my client. For my product research, which was the primary and secondary research, I studied 8 different existing products. By looking
at these products, I reached a conclusion about the maximum costs of such products. This research also helped to come up with more innovative
ideas regarding the unit. Also, this helped me to gain knowledge about which type of products are best sold for their specific features. Next, the
designer research helped me to visit a profile where a lady already makes different types of organizers for day to day problems. While going
through her profile, I came across an amazing jewelry organizer. I used couple of ideas from her website to make my unit more suitable for my
client. Moreover, she had given the whole description for how to use the material as less as possible and still create an amazing organizer in less
time.
Next up, I drew the ideas by hand and added annotations for the reader to deeply understand what ideas I am trying to convey. Every idea was
unique, and fit to purpose. Next, I decided to develop each of the ideas further. In the developments I stated how each of the unit was to be
assembled. I discussed all the ideas with my client and gave her the liberty to tell me which one was the most suitable. The design we selected
was exactly according to the client’s need.
In order to start my work, I first visited the market for a small research on different types of materials. I visited different shops where different
types of laminated chipboards were available. I asked for their prices and kept visiting different sites for other things. After our market research, I
created a cutting list that included the total amount of all the materials I needed with their prices calculated accordingly. After the cutting list was
made, I made a small flowchart of all the steps to be carried out.
Next up was the production plan which stated some of the main processes and the way of quality control during each process. The next step was
the construction of the unit, which was quite challenging. I faced minor problems like pasting the PVC tape and precise cutting of pieces
laminated chip board.
Overall, I believe that my project reflects all the specifications mentioned earlier. I am satisfied with the end product I have created as it fits the
purpose. However, cutting sanding and finishing was not as per my satisfaction because the edges and corners appeared to be rough.
Also, by adding the Gantt chart, it allowed me to meet the specific deadlines and was helpful in organizing my work. I did not come across many
problems and met almost each and every deadline on time.
I would like to highlight the key strengths and weaknesses of my product:
Strengths:
Fit for purpose.
Provides separate compartments for individual jewelry items and other accessories.
User friendly and easy to store and retrieve jewelry of interest.
Compact and sturdy.
Aesthetically appealing as I have added a mirror and abstract design has painted on the side of the mirror.
Weaknesses:
Exceeding weight limit slightly which could have been avoided by using even better design tactics.
Wall brackets diminish the overall look of the product in its environment which could be avoided using concealed brackets.
Needs more capacity for ring holders and necklaces.
Although metal mesh to hang earrings is used. However, with passage of time it may not be safer due to wear and tear.
Corners and edges seem rough hence giving an untidy look.
Future Recommendations:
If I make this product again or go for mass production I will make the following changes in my product:
I can use some other light weight material for the inner compartments; such as acrylic or some other engineered wood of reduced thickness
The wall brackets could either be placed on the back side or a railing be used to hang which can be easily detached.
Unnecessary compartments need to be modified to have more space for rings and necklaces.
Aesthetics can be improved using carved wooden beading instead of PVC tape.
Plastic/nylon mesh (that can hold the weight of the jewelry) can be used. This will avoid injuries if jewelry is taken off form the mesh portion
in haste.
