Things To Know
1.Tallest tree : The tallest trees in the world are redwoods (Sequoia sempervirens), which
tower above the ground in California. These trees can easily reach heights of 300 feet (91
meters). Among theredwoods, a tree named Hyperion dwarfs them all. The tree was
discovered in 2006, and is 379.7 feet (115.7 m) tall.Apr 15, 2013
2. Oldest tree: Until 2013, the oldest individual tree in the world was Methuselah, a 4,845-
year-old Great Basin bristlecone pine (Pinus longaeva) in the White Mountains of
California.Aug 23, 2016
3. Widest tree: General Sherman, the biggest tree in the world. The tree called "General
Sherman" is not only the biggest giant sequoia, but it is also the biggest tree in the world.
He is 83.8 m (274.9 feet) tall, his girth at breast height is 24,10 m (79 feet) (near the ground
it is 31,3 m or 102,6 feet).
4. The world's largest living thing is even bigger than a blue whale (which happens to be the
largest animal living now). Meet Armillaria ostoyae, or, as it's nicknamed, the Humongous
Fungus. It's an organism that covers 2,385 acres (almost 4 square miles) of the Malheur
National Forest in Oregon.May 6, 2017
5. Mycoplasma genitalium. Mycoplasma genitalium, a parasitic bacterium which lives in
the primate bladder, waste disposal organs, genital, and respiratory tracts, is thought to be
the smallest known organism capable of independent growth and reproduction.
6. The Great Basin Bristlecone Pine (Pinus longaeva) is a species of pine tree. It is found in
the American West, mostly in Utah, Nevada, and California. One of these trees has been
measured to be 5,065 years old! That makes it the longest livingnon-clonal organism on
Earth.
7. Until 2013, the oldest individual tree in the world was Methuselah, a 4,845-year-old Great
Basin bristlecone pine (Pinus longaeva) in the White Mountains of California.Aug 23, 2016
8. The Etruscan shrew shares the title of world's smallest mammal with a fascinating
creature from Thailand: Kitti's hog-nosed bat (Craseonycteris thonglongyai), also known as
the bumblebee bat. It gets its nickname from its size — barely over an inch long — which
makes it about the size of a large bumblebee!
9. You may have heard of Ming, the deep-sea clam named after the Chinese dynasty during
which it was born. When it died in 2006, it was believed to be the oldest living animal ever
recorded. This ocean quahog, scientifically known as Arctica islandica, lived for 507 years
and came to an inglorious end.
10. This ancient zircon crystal is the oldest known material formed on Earth. Scientists have
dated the crystal to about 4.4 billion years, making it the earliest confirmed piece of the
planet's crust. The crystal was found in an arid region north of Perth, Australia, in a low
range of hills called the Jack Hills, in 2001.
11. Long before our Sun and Earth ever existed, a Jupiter-sized planet formed around a
sun-like star. Now, 13 billion years later, NASA's Hubble Space Telescope has precisely
measured the mass of this farthest and oldest known planet.
12. The tree species known only as Pennantia baylisiana could be the rarest plant on
Earth. In fact, the Guinness Book of World Records once called it that. Just a single tree
exists in the wild, on one of the Three Kings Islands off the coast of New Zealand, where it
has sat, alone, since 1945.
15. Wolffia
The world's smallest flowering plant is the watermeal, or Wolffia globosa. Found all
over the planet, this bright green oval plant is about the size of a grain of rice!
Wolffia is the smallest genus of the aquatic plants known as duckweeds, which are
part of the family Lemnaceae.
16. We hear a lot about the fastest things on Earth, the peregrine falcons, sailfish and
cheetahs of this world. But what are the slowest? Earth Unplugged's Maddie Moate
discovers that animals that live life in the slow lane, like tortoises, sloths and garden snails,
are the masters of survival.
B. Animal
17.Cutest animal in world: It's common to argue over whether puppies or kittens are cuter, but
what about hummingbirds and wombats? We thought wild animals deserved some love too,
and came up with the 20 cutest undomesticated animals. From koalas to tamarin monkeys,
these are the world's cutest wild creatures.
18. Dolphins are well-documented as intelligent animals. As Discovery News reports, the
dolphin's large brain is structured for awareness and emotion. In fact, dolphin brains are
more structurally complex than humans.
19. In fact, there are records of dogs living well past 20-years-old. Although this list of
the longest living dog breeds doesn't contain the Australian Cattle Dog, the world record
for the longest living dog is an ACD named Bluey. Bluey passed away in 1939 at the ripe
age of 29-years-old!
20. Fastest growing thing on earth: The world record for the fastest growing plant belongs to
certain species of the 45genera of bamboo, which have been found to grow at up to 91 cm
(35 in) per day or at a rate of 0.00003 km/h (0.00002 mph).
21. Oldest living thing on earth: A Great Basin bristlecone pine (Pinus longaeva) is
measured by ring count to be 5067 years old. This is the oldest known tree in North America,
and the oldest known living individual nonclonal tree in the world.
22.Oldest rock in the world: By zapping single atoms of lead in a tiny zircon crystal from
Australia, researchers have confirmed the crystal is the oldest rock fragment ever found
on Earth — 4.375 billion years old, plus or minus 6 million years.
23. In 1964, Donal Rusk Currey killed the oldest tree ever. To this day, there has still never
been an older tree discovered. The tree was a Great Basin bristlecone pine, and Currey
didn't meant to kill it. It was an accident, and one he didn't really understand the ramifications
of until he started counting rings.
24. The world's largest living thing is even bigger than a blue whale (which happens to be
the largest animal living now). Meet Armillaria ostoyae, or, as it's nicknamed,
the Humongous Fungus. It's an organism that covers 2,385 acres (almost 4 square miles)
of the Malheur National Forest in Oregon.
C. Science
25. IUPAC is naming the four new elements nihonium, moscovium, tennessine,
and oganesson
Nihonium and symbol Nh, for the element 113,
Moscovium and symbol Mc, for the element 115,
Tennessine and symbol Ts, for the element 117, and.
Oganesson and symbol Og, for the element 118.
Marine National Park in Gulf of Kutch is situated on the southern shore of the Gulf of
in the Jamnagar of Gujarat. It is the first national marine park of India with 42
islands on the Jamnagar coast in the Marine National Park.
