W HAT IS P ITCH

The quality of a sound governed by the rate of vibrations producing it; the degree of highness or lowness of
a tone.

W HAT IS OCTAVE ?

An octave is a series of eight notes occupying the interval between (and including) two notes, one having
twice or half the frequency of vibration of the other.

7
W HAT IS SCALE ?

Scale (Scala in Latin means ladder) is any consecutive series of notes that forms a progression between
one note and its octave. Western music divides the octave into twelve steps, each one being equal to a
semi-tone.
To form a scale pick a scale you want to learn, C Major Scale for example; start with C and follow the
interval pattern. Steps: C whole step to D another whole step to E half step to F (Note: there are no sharps
or flats between E and F -- the same applies between B and C) then we take a whole step to G then
another whole step to A then another whole step to B and finally a half step to C (the octave note). So we
get these notes: C-D-E-F-G-A-B-C

(W - Whole Step, H - Half Step)

Intervals: Root -2-3-4-5-6-7-Octave
W-W-H-W-W-W-H
All major scales have a semi-tone interval between the 3rd and 4th and the 7th and 8th notes, so the
pattern is easy to work out along one string: two frets, two frets, one fret, two frets, two frets, two frets, one
fret.
C-Major Scale

Chromatic Scale
A one octave series of tones that includes every half-step note is called a chromatic scale.

The chromatic scale is a musical scale with twelve pitches, each a semitone above or below another. On a
modern piano or other equal-tempered instrument, all the semitones are the same size.
A 'step' is the distance from one distinct note to the next.

8
C-Scale or C-Major Scale
To determine the notes of the C Major scale:

1. Write out the chromatic scale,

2. Beginning at the root of the scale (C), create a tetrachord,
3. Add a whole step,
4. Create a second tetrachord.

Step 1. Write out the chromatic scale. Since we're creating a C major
scale, write out the chromatic scale beginning at the root (C):

C C# D D# E F F# G G# A A# B C

Step 2. Starting on the root of the scale we wish to create (C), form the
first tetrachord. To form the tetrachord begin with C, add a whole-step
to determine the second note (D), then another whole-step (to E), and
finally, a half-step (to F).

C D E F

W W h

Step 3. Next add a whole-step to the last note of the tetrachord (F).
That means our second tetrachord will begin with a G.

Step 4. Using the same pattern (whole-step, whole-step, half-step), our

second tetrachord is:

G A B C

W W h

So, the C major scale uses the notes:

C D E F G A B C

W W h W W W h

<-1st tetrachord-> <-2nd tetrachord->

Strumming Representation

13
Pattern 1

Try to make your strums as even in tone and in volume.

Pattern 2

When you have the previous pattern mastered, add in up strums between each down
strum to make the pattern more interesting. You would count these up strums in
between the main beats by counting the word “and” like: 1 and, 2 and, 3 and, 4 and,
repeat.

14
Pattern 3

This strumming pattern combines the first two patterns. For this pattern, insert an up
strum on the “and” of beats 2 and 4.

Pattern 4

You can get creative by rearranging the order of your down strums and up strums
within the count of four. This pattern is like pattern #3, but in this pattern, you insert an
up strum on the “and” of beats 1 and 3.

Pattern 5

15
This strumming pattern is sometimes referred to as the calypso strum. This pattern is
the most complicated out of all of the patterns. This is because the down strum on beat
3 is removed and you only play an up strum on the “and” of the third beat. You’ll want to
be sure to watch the video to get a sense for how this pattern sounds and feels. Once
you get it down, you’ll find that it’s an easy pattern to apply to a lot of different songs.
