2. Background

Because of reactor’s insulation paint bad condition, Fingrid requested survey for reactors painting.
Reactors were photographed, serial numbers were collected and forwarded to manufacturer’s
(TRENCH) specialist to closer examination.

After closer examination in manufacturer, TRENCH was send guidelines, history data and specific
instructions for reactors repainting.

In below, only history data were found from DC-smoothing reactor:

P1-L2 (GDH 700/1310/112,5) reactor was back for testing in 2009 at Trench. This coil was also
coated with silicone coating material (RTV) before it was returned.

All other filter reactors and other smoothing reactor (P1-L2) were painted only with insulating paint.
Silicon coating material (RTV) is only used for DC-smoothing reactors (P1-L1 and P1-L2).

3. TRENCH Guidelines and recommended actions

Recommendations from TRENCH for repainting reactors:

AC- and DC- Filter Reactors:

TRENCH:

“We recommend all filter reactors to be repainted with insulating paint soonest. The erosion of the
paint is already very high.“

- Action: All AC- and DC-filter reactors needed to repaint with insulating paint by following
manufacturers instructions.

DC Smoothing Reactors:

TRENCH:

“The second GDH reactor at moment is without silicone coated surface, we recommend to coat also
this coil with RTV.
However the uncoated coil must be repainted with primer and insulating paint before. After this
preparation the coil is ready for coating with silicone protective material (RTV).”

- Action: P1-L1 reactor is recommend to process with primer, paint and RTV-material by
following manufacturers instructions.

TRENCH:

“The first already coated coil must only be cleaned with clean water, after drying it can be recoated
with silicone material.”

- Action: P1-L2 reactor was testing in 2009 at Trench. This coil was also coated with silicone
coating material (RTV) before it was returned. Now it is recommended to recoat with RTV.

AC PLC-Filter Reactors:

TRENCH:

“The optic is good of the coils. It is not forcing this coils to repainting.
This coils are from Trench Canada, not from our factory.
The have another paint system, however we think this not a problem, but we cannot guarantee the
adhesion from our paint of this type of coils. Please test a small area before you paint the whole coil.
My suggestion is this coils to paint with the rest of the paint, at first I would to paint all other coils.”

- Action: Paint condition for these 6pc of coils is pretty good. Need to consider necessity for
repainting these reactors
