Since 2007, PolitiFact has

focused on fact-checking journalism by looking at specific statements made by
politicians and rating them for accuracy. No one tells us what to write about or how
to rate statements. Owned by the nonprofit Poynter Institute, the reason we publish
is to give citizens the information they need to govern themselves in a democracy.
