PS 346’s Virtual Graduation
September 4, 2020 SPRING CREEK SUN Page 5

BY: PAMELA STERN

On June 25th Abe Stark Primary School 346’s (PS 346) fifth grade graduation
was held virtually on Zoom. Families were anxious to celebrate the amazing
accomplishments of these 5th graders.
Principal Kevin Caifa addressed the 5th graders with an inspiring speech and
wished them well as they moved from elementary school to middle school. The
assembly of the students on Zoom started with the Pledge of Allegiance to the
Flag. All of the speeches were filmed prior to the virtual graduation. Teachers and
faculty presented their own messages to the students through photographs of
them holding up signs to the graduates.
Assistant Principals, Ms. Andreanna Balkaran and Dr. Vafiadi addressed the
5th graders and expressed how thrilled they were with this class of 5th graders,
and how well they handled the remote learning.
Alyssa Jackson, Vice President of PS 346’s Class of 2020 spoke to her class
and inspired them to look forward to middle school.
There was a slide show presentation of messages
from their teachers, photos from throughout the
school year and screenshots of the online classes.
Congratulations to PS 346’s Class of 2020.

Fill Out your 2020 Census!

Dear Neighbors and friends,

Hope everyone is staying safe and vigilant. Due to all the extreme changes we are experiencing
because of COVID 19 and the city shutting down, the Starrett City Tenant Association Executive
Bd. has found it necessary to extend membership and officer positions from June 20, 2020
through September 20, 2020. This will afford the SCTA the opportunity to complete the election
process and close out our fiscal year. Since this is the first time a disaster of such magnitude has
occurred in our lifetime, we will also take the opportunity to adjust our bylaws accordingly.

Please be on the lookout for updates to the process.

Thank you for your continued support, participation, understanding and patience

On August 22nd, members of the United States Census Bureau

Evaluate Your Income and Assets

BY MICHAEL HALL

There are two sides to budgeting: what you spend and what you
earn. If your income has already taken a hit because of the A match made for your wallet.
coronavirus, you simply can’t continue to budget your money the
same way.
The first step in budgeting amid coronavirus concerns is figuring
out what your new baseline for income is if your hours have been cut
or a job loss or layoff has affected your household. This can give you
an idea of how deeply you’ll need to cut your budget.
For example, if you’ve experienced a 50% pay cut, then that may
correspond to cutting 50% or more of your regular spending. This
assumes that you’re spending the same amount you’re earning (or

less) each month and not creating debt. If you were living above your
means pre-COVID-19, then you may need to make even deeper cuts
to get your budget to work.
On the income side of your budget equation, be sure to include the
expanded unemployment benefits to which you may be entitled under
the federal stimulus package which includes self-employed and
freelance individuals who work as independent contractors.
Save up to 25%
Next, look at what you have in savings that you might be able to tap
into. Ideally, you have an emergency fund that can cover three to six
months’ worth of expenses in place. But if you don’t, don’t panic.
Add up what you do have to see how you could use that to
supplement your income. No amount of money is too big or too small.

Speaking of Health
Protect Your Health During
Cancer Treatment

(StatePoint) Cancer can be a difficult and overwhelming diagnosis, and

if you have cancer or are undergoing cancer treatment, your top priority is
to get healthy. After your cancer diagnosis, there are many new things you
might need to learn and manage. The Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention and the National Blood Clot Alliance want you to protect your
health by understanding your risk for dangerous blood clots, because
cancer and some cancer treatments can increase your risk. About 900,000
people in the U.S. each year are affected by blood clots, and about one in
five of these blood clots are associated with cancer.
The risk for a blood clot is greatest in the first few months after cancer
is diagnosed. Some cancers pose a greater risk for blood clots, including
cancers involving the pancreas, stomach, brain, lung, uterus, ovaries and
kidneys, as well as blood cancers such as lymphoma and myeloma. The
higher your cancer stage, the greater your risk for a blood clot. The type of
cancer treatment you receive may increase your risk for blood clots too.
Treatments involving hospitalization, surgery, chemotherapy, hormonal
therapy, catheters placed in your veins, and some other therapies can
increase your blood clot risk. You good?
Know the Signs and Symptoms of a Blood Clot
Blood clots occur most often in the legs or arms, and symptoms include:
• Swelling
• Pain or tenderness not caused by an injury
• Skin that may be warm to the touch, red or discolored

Blood clots in your legs or arms can travel to your lungs, which can be
deadly. Symptoms of blood clots in your lungs include:
• Difficulty breathing
• Chest pain that worsens with a deep breath
• Coughing up blood
• Faster than normal or irregular heartbeat

Contact your cancer doctor immediately if you experience any blood clot
symptoms.

A Plan to Protect Your Health

As you take steps to preserve your health, make blood clot awareness
part of your care.
• Know your risks for blood clots, and discuss these risks with your cancer
doctor.
• Stay alert for any signs or symptoms of blood clots after surgery or
treatment in an outpatient clinic. Contact your cancer doctor right away if
you experience any of these signs or symptoms.
• Work with your cancer doctor and make a plan to protect yourself against
blood clots that is specific to your personal medical history and treatment.

Visit www.stoptheclot.org/spreadtheword/cancer for more information.
