Team Rock ATP and Oxidative

Climbing Presents: Phosphorylation

Brought to you by: Abraham Lair and Austin Orr 11/12/10

Period 2
Key Questions

1. What is oxidative phosphorylation?

2. How does oxidative phosphorylation produce ATP?
3. What type of reaction occurs during oxidative
phosphorylation?
Oxidative Phosphorylation (OP)

OP is a metabolic pathway that uses energy released from

oxidation of nutrients to produce ATP.

ATP!!

Almost all forms of life carry out oxidative phosphorylation to

produce ATP.

This process is a highly efficient way of releasing energy,

compared to alternative fermentation processes.
Electron Transport Chain (ETC)

The ETC in the mitochondria is the site of oxidative

phosphorylation.

The NADH and succinate generated in the citric acid cycle

are oxidized, releasing energy to power the ATP synthase.

Basically it is the transfer of a H+

ion from NADH to an O2.
Electron Transport Chain
Redox Reactions
(Oxidation-Reduction)
A redox reaction is a chemical reaction in which atoms have
their oxidation number changed.

During oxidative phosphorylation redox reactions will transfer

electrons and releases energy that forms ATP.

This reaction is carried out by the electron transport chain.

A bonfire and rusting iron are

examples of redox reactions.
