Preparation before the Rehearsal

Fr. Anthony Ruff, OSB

Saint John’s Abbey and University

1. Know the piece well – mode, scriptural source, liturgical placement.

2. Memorize the text. Be able to say it while understanding it.

3. Memorize the melody too if possible.

4. Analyze the melody melodically, rhythmically, and modally so as to

arrive at what it proclaims theologically and spiritually. Let this
become your passion!

5. Identify and anticipate likely challenges and be prepared to address

them.

6. If you’re preparing the score, it should be accurate, legible, and

attractive, and include a translation of the text.

7. Prepare the room (e.g. chair placement) ahead of time, so you can
greet singers as they arrive. The seating should help singers be
connected to each other, with enough space to sing without
inhibition.

8. Mentally and spiritual prepare yourself – however you best do that –

so you are calm, optimistic, energetic, and affirming.
