Exemplar Lesson Plan Template: FRESHMAN CAREER PAPER

Unit Title: FRESHMAN CAREER PAPER UNIT III

Title of Lesson Plan: Freshman Career Paper

Lesson Goal: Students will research and develop a paper that explores a chosen career,
utilizing learned knowledge on how to correctly paraphrase information, as well as cite it
using MLA sources cited procedure. Students will also learn how to discern knowledge and
information found on the Internet in terms of what is most appropriate.

Focus Standards being Explicitly Taught and Assessed:

ELA.CCSS.ELA-Literacy.CCRA.W.4:Production and Distribution of Writing: Produce clear and coherent


writing in which the development, organization, and style are appropriate to task, purpose, and audience.

ELA.CCSS.ELA-Literacy.CCRA.W.7: Research to Build and Present Knowledge: Conduct short as well as


more sustained research projects based on focused questions, demonstrating understanding of the
subject under investigation.

ELA.CCSS.ELA-Literacy.CCRA.W.2: Text Types and Purposes: Write informative/explanatory texts to


examine and convey complex ideas and information clearly and accurately through the effective selection,
organization, and analysis of content.

ELA.CCSS.ELA-Literacy.CCRA.W.5: Production and Distribution of Writing: Develop and strengthen writing


as needed by planning, revising, editing, rewriting, or trying a new approach.

ELA.CCSS.ELA-Literacy.CCRA.W.8: Research to Build and Present Knowledge: Gather relevant information


from multiple print and digital sources, assess the credibility and accuracy of each source, and integrate
the information while avoiding plagiarism.

and to interact and collaborate with others.

ELA.CCSS.ELA-Literacy.CCRA.L.1: Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English grammar


and usage when writing or speaking.

Objectives: To be able to meet these standards, students need to be able to do the following:
This is where you include Bloom’s revised Taxonomy and Webb’s Depth of Knowledge:

● Students will take the Explore test in fall and get their results early second semester.
● Counselors explain the results to students, who will use them to determine areas of
career interest.
● After receiving their results students will go to Career Information System (CIS) and
create a profile.
● Students will take different lifestyle tests provided by CIS to help determine career
choices.
Students will need to know how to synthesize and paraphrase information..
Students will receive instruction on how to correctly use MLA in their research paper, both in
sources cited and in-text citation.
Students will need to discern pertinent and extraneous information.
Students will learn how to take notes to develop into cohesive paragraphs.

Writing skills such as using correct subject-verb tense, third person point-of-view, transitions,
active/passive verbs will also be taught in order to develop stronger writing.

Students will receive feedback on their paragraphs from both peers and their instructor,
taking this feedback their paragraphs into a one to two page typed paper with MLA sources
cited.

Unit Enduring Understandings Addressed:

Researching and investigating areas of interest is an important aspect of making an informed


decision for one’s future.
An important part of being college and career ready is learning how to decimate and discern
career tracks.

Procedures:

1. Reserve library early for research time (at least three class sessions with one being the
counselor visit)
2.Go through Career Paper PPT for overview and expectations of assignment.
3. Meet with counselor in library to go over Explore results with students.
4. Students set up their CIS profile and take inventory tests.
5. Students investigate various career options and start taking notes.
6. Students will write up their notes/outline to create a one to two page research paper
complete with MLA sources cited.
7. Before final paper is due, peer review
8. Turn in final paper
9. Go over paper, demonstrating with exemplar students papers
10. Provide opportunity to write for mastery
Differentiation:

Students can work with partners for peer review as they prepare their final copies.
For reluctant learners (strategic) have the possibility of having length and sources required
modified.

Assessments (Formative & Summative) with Rubric/Scoring Guide:

The completed research paper represents the final unit assessment.
