(16)
1. INTRODUCTION

Every business or organization exist because they have

something to sell, whether product, service or even a cause or the way of thinking.
But “selling” means different things to different people, which is where marketing
comes in.

Definition of Marketing:

“It is the process of planning and executive product, price,

promotion and distribution of goods and services to create exchange and satisfy
individual and organizational objectives.”

-American Marketing Association

According to Phillip Kotler,

“Marketing is about satisfying needs and wants through an

exchange process”

Marketing has both inbound and outbound activities. Inbound

activities largely center on discovering the needs and wants of the potential
customers. The collective group of all potential customers is called a market.
Organizing markets into segments allows producers to more logically decide how to
best provide value to that group of potential customers. The analysis of market
segment needs analysis of existing sales and profitability. The analysis of competitor
of new products and the analysis of competitor offerings are also inbound activities
that are important but not often seen by the public.

(17)
Outbound activities include all aspects of informing the market
that a product is available, delivering that product and encouraging the purchase
decision. These activities include advertising, promotion, supply chain, sales support,
product training and customer support.

2. Research process 26

(24)
1. INTRODUCTION

Definition of Research:

“Research is the systematic design and collection,

interpretation, reporting of information to help marketer to solve specific marketing
problem or take advantage of marketing opportunities.”

“Research is the function which links the customers, consumer

and public to the market through information. Information used to identify and define
marketing opportunities and problems.”

Research Methodology is a way to systematically solve the

research problem. It may be understood as a science of studying how research is done
scientifically. Research methodology has many dimensions and research methods do
constitute a part of the research methodology. The scope of research methodology is
wider than that of research methods.

Thus, when we talk of research methodology, we do not only

talk of the research methods but also consider the logic behind the methods we use in
the context of our research study and explain why we are using a particular method or
techniques and why we are not using others so that research results are capable of
being evaluated either by the researcher himself or by others.

(25)
2. RESEARCH PROCESS

1. Defining research problem and objectives

2. Develop the research plan

- Data sources
- Research approach
- Research instruments
- Research design
- Sampling
 Sampling unit
 Sample size
 Sampling procedure
 Contact methods

3. Collection and analysis of data

(26)
1. Defining problems and research objectives:

First researcher must define the problem and its scope in a way
that requires probing specifically symptoms. The interrelation between the research
and researcher should yield a clear definition of the problem. Research and decision
makes should remain in the problem define stage until they have determined what
they want from the research and how they will use it. Research objective specifies
what information is needed to solve the problem. Deciding how to refine a broad
information problem into clearly defined and researchable statement is perquisites for
the next step in planning the research.

Objective:

Which Gujarati newspaper is most read by the people of Gujarat and which
newspaper is cover more market share?

Sub Objective:

Which newspaper is most popular in Gujarat?

How many people are reading newspapers?

What people think about their newspaper?

Are they satisfied with their newspaper?

Are various promotional activities increases the sale of newspaper?

(27)
2. DEVELOP THE RESEARCH PLAN

This stage cause for developing the most effective plan for
gathering the needed information. The marketing manager needs to know the cost of
research plan before applying it. Designing the research plan is cause for decision on
the data, source, research approaches, research instruments, sampling plan and contact
methods.

1) Data Sources:

Primary Data:

Freshly gathers for a specific purpose for a specific research

project.

Secondary Data:

What were collected for another purpose and already exist

somewhere?

Primary data collection

Observation:

1) Personal
2) Mechanical

1) Mail
2) Telephone
3) Personal
Secondary data collection

Internal Sources:

1) Records
2) Marketing data bank

External Sources:

1) Reports
2) Internet

In this research the data is used; from Primary Data Collection and
secondary Data Collection.

In this research primary data method survey has been used and for
basic information secondary data has been collected.

3) Research Approaches:

1) Observation research
2) Focus group research
3) Survey research
4) Behavioral data
5) Experimental

In this selected approach is survey research.

(29)
3) Research Design:

It is preparation of the design of the research project popularly known

as the research design.

A research design is the arrangement of conditions for collection and

analysis of data in a manner that aims to combine relevant to the research purpose
with economy in procedure.

It constitutes the blueprint for the collection measurement and analysis

of data:

Sampling design:

This deals with the method of selecting items to be observed for the
given study.

Observational design:

This relates to the conditions under which the observations are to be

made.

Statistical design:

This concerns with the question of how many items are to observed
and how the information and gathered are to be analyzed.

(30)
Operational design:

This deals with the techniques by which the procedures specify in the
sampling, statistical and observational design can be carries out.

Types of research design:

1) Exploratory research

a) Survey of concerning literature

b) Experience survey
c) Insight-stimulating

2) Descriptive and diagnostic research:

Descriptive research concerned with describing the characteristics of a

particular individual or of a group. Diagnostic research studies determine the
frequency with which association with something else, the study concerning whether
certain variable is associated, are examples of diagnostic research study. From this
point of view of the research design, the descriptive as well as diagnostic studies,
share common requirement and as such we may group together these two types of
research studies the researcher must be able to define clearly what he wants to
measure and must find adequate methods for measuring it along with a clear-cut
definition of population.

The design in such study must be rigid and not flexible.

Focus on: -

1. Formulating the objective of study

2. Designing the methods of data collection

(31)

3. Selecting the sample

4. Collecting the data

5. Processing and analyzing the data

6. Reporting

3) Hypothesis testing research

The selected research design is Descriptive and Diagnostic Research.

4. Research instrument:

1. Questionnaires

2. Qualitative measures

1) Shadowing

2) Behavior mapping

3) Consumer journey

4) Extreme user interview

5) Story telling

6) Unfocused group

3. Mechanical devices
(32)

Questionnaires:

It consists of set of questions presented to respondents. It is a

most common instruments used to collect primary data, its need to be carefully
developed, tested and debugged.

The form of question may be open ended and close ended.

Closed ended questions are the possible answers and provide answers that are easier
to interpret and tabulate.

Open ended questions allow respondents to answer in their

words and often reveal more about people thinks. They are especially useful in
exploratory research, where the researcher looking for insight into how people think
rather than measuring how merely people think a certain way.

For conducting survey, questionnaire has been designed as per

objectives.

6) Sampling Plan:

 Sampling Unit:

Researcher must define the target population that will be samples.

Once the sampling unit is determined, sampling frame must be developed so that
every on in the target population has an equal chance of being sample.

(33)
Regarding the object comparison among Divya Bhaskar, Gujarat
Samachar and Sandesh, the sampling units are the people who are reading the
newspaper.

 Sample size = 100

 Sampling Procedure:

1. Probability sample:

To obtain a representative sample, a probability should be

drawn; it allows the calculation of confidence limits for sampling error. When
cost and time involved in probability sampling is too high, marketing
researchers will take non-probability sample.

i. Simple random
ii. Stratified random
iii. Cluster/ area

2. Non-probability sample:

i. Convenience
ii. Judgment
iii. Quota

Selected sampling method is simple random.

(34)
Every member of the population has an equal chance of selection.

6) Contact Methods:

1. Telephone
2. Personal interview
3. Online
4. Mail

Selected contact method is Personal Interview.

(35)
3. Collection and Analysis of data

Collection of data:

It is generally most expensive and the purest to error. In survey,

some major problems arise, like some respondents, will not be at home and must be
conducted again/ replaced. Other will give biased/ dishonest response. Getting the
right respondents is critical.

Analysis of data:

All the research data has to be properly formulated, tabulated

and develop frequency distribution. The research also has to apply statistical
techniques.
