drought this summer.

The Perambur ICF lake was brimming with water with water about
10 foot deep

The lake which measures about 450 m long and 250 m wide has
been for many years used for garbage and waste disposal, making its
water unfit for consumption.

ICF has set out to rejenuvatethe lake and turn the water body into a
tourist destination.

The lake is believed to have seven infiltration wells which prevented it

from going dry during the drought.

Historical events
India's first railway proposals were made in Madras in 1832. The Red Hill Railway, the country's first train, ran from Red
Hills to Chintadripet bridge in Madras in 1837.
Perambur ICF Railway colony was developed during the early establishment of railways in 1850.

The evolution of settlements and development within the colony remains the same for at least half a century. Since there has
been no major change. The colony is home for various Native Trees and Bird species.
South India's first passenger train ran from Royapuram–Vysarpadi to Wallajah Road in Arcot, a distance of 60 miles
(97 km), on 1 July 1856.
It was built and operated by the Madras Railway. The Madras Railway's first workshop opened in Perambur.
The workshop was established in the year 1856 to serve the Erstwhile Madras and Southern Mahratta Railway
Company.
It was a combined Locomotive, Carriage & Coach building workshop and later bifurcated in 1932, shifting the Locomotive
activity to the new Loco workshop which was built adjacent to the original workshop.
Railways in Perambur is also noteworthy because of the visit of Mahatma Gandhi in 1933.
The Integral Coach Factory is one of the earliest production units of independent India.
It was initiated by CM Kamaraj and inaugurated by the first PM of India Jawaharlal Nehru on 2 October 1955.

Vegetation and Biodiversity
• The Tropical dry evergreen forests are an ecoregion of southeastern India. The ecoregion includes eastern Tamil
Nadu, part of Puducherry and south eastern Andhra Pradesh.
• The original vegetation of the ecoregion consisted of forests with an understory of evergreen trees and an emergent
canopy of taller deciduous trees, including Sal (Shorea robusta), Albizia amara and Chloroxylon spp.
• Most of the ecoregion's forests have been degraded into tropical dry evergreen scrublands, characterized by thorny
species such as Ziziphus glaberrima, Dichrostachys cinerea, Catunaregam spinosa, and Carissa spinarum.
Common plant species
• Since the Perambur ICF was a planed development on a vacant land. The primary vegetation within the region has a
set of avenue trees and invasive ground cover.
