▪ In the transmission system, power developed
by the engine transmits to road wheels to
propel the vehicle
▪ There should also be a system using which
the engine could
be engaged and disengaged with the
transmission system smoothly.
▪ A Clutch is a mechanism used for this
purpose. It connects or disconnects the
engine from the rest of the transmission
elements.
▪ It is located between the engine and
gearbox. The clutch disengages for starting,
changing gears, stopping, and idling.
▪ Mainly it consists of a clutch plate with friction lining on
both sides and some other parts like a flywheel, pressure
plate, thrust bearing, hub, springs, and input mechanism
for engagement and disengagement of the clutch.
• The clutch plate is attached to the hub between the
flywheel and the pressure plate, it moves axially on the
driven shaft.
• In a single plate clutch, the clutch plate should have
friction lining on both sides in order to place it between
the pressure plate and flywheel.
• The pressure plate is engaged along with the flywheel
and springs. It helps to keep the clutch plate in contact
with the flywheel.
• A lever is attached to thrust bearing with some
mechanism on the driven shaft which transmits input and
output motion from the clutch pedal
▪ Flywheel: 1. maintains a rotating mass (inertia)
2. to provide a ring gear for the starter motor to engage on
3. to provide one of the driving friction surfaces for the friction
disc on the clutch plate

▪ Thrust bearing: 1. to support the end of the transmission input shaft

2. to prevent wobbling of the transmission shaft and
clutch plate
3. assists the input shaft center of the disc on the
flywheel

▪ Clutch/Disc plate: 1. driven member of a single plate clutch

2. lined with friction material on both sides
3. has a central hub with internal splines
4. made with asbestos material
▪ Pressure plate: 1. made of special cast iron

2. heaviest part of the clutch assembly

3. to establish even contact with the driven plate facing
through which pressure springs can exert sufficient
force
▪ Springs: 1. connected to pressure plate with help of bolts

2. helps clutch plate to make contact with flywheel

3. maintains the flywheels motion forward or backward from the
clutch plate’s frictional surface
Disengaging the clutch (i.e., when pedal is pressed
down):
▪ It’s linkage forces the thrust bearing to move towards the
flywheels
▪ Thus, pressing the pressure plate away from the flywheel
thereby the compression springs are compressed. This
action removes the pressure from the clutch plate and the
driving shaft comes to a stationary position.
Engaging the clutch (i.e., when foot is taken off the
pedal):
▪ The thrust bearing moves back & this action allows the
springs to extend Animation
▪ Thus, the pressure plate pushes the clutch plate back
towards the flywheel. The clutch is engaged and power is
transmitted from engine to gearbox.
▪ Single plate clutches have been found to provide a quick response on their
operation.
▪ Less generation of heat due to availability of sufficient surface area
▪ As the torque is low, the amount of power loss is also low. As a result, the engine
performs the work smoothly

▪ Single plate clutches require high maintenance as they are dry. Consequently, any
leakage can damage the clutch
▪ They occupy much larger space compared to a multi plate clutch
▪ Torque transmission capability is less considering the occupation of a large surface
area
▪ In the automotive industry, a single
plate clutch is employed by most of
the vehicles around the globe.

▪ Due to large surface area, no cooling

medium is required. Heat is
dissipated easily due to more
exposure to surrounding air. So, this
type of clutch is preferred in larger
vehicles like trucks or buses.
