Act 1 - Scene 1

 How is the first entrance of the ghost and its second exit made impressive? In other
words, what is the situation surrounding it? Mention any superstitions connected with
ghosts referred to in this scene.

Answer: The ghost's first entrance was walking through a door. Before appearance, the ghost
creates the awe-inspiring power mystery and fear atmosphere. The ghost entered once the bell
beat. Horatio believes the appearance of the ghost giving a warning for misfortune for Denmark.
Horatio also believes that if it was King Hamlet's spirit, then he would not hesitate to speak with
his beloved son, Prince Hamlet.

Act 1 - Scene 2

 How does Claudius (the new King) attempt to justify his hasty marriage to the Queen?
Summarize what Hamlet is contemplating in the soliloquy, "Frailty, thy name is woman!"
Who is he referring to, and why?

Answer: "Frailty, thy name is a woman," Hamlet refers to the fragility that caused his mother to
marry Claudius, his mediocre uncle. Claudius says his heart is broken due to the death of his
brother, however life goes on and has chosen to delight Denmark, by announcing his marriage.
The death of Hamlet's father hurts him so much, and she runs to incestuous sheet and facts.

Act 1 - Scene 3

1. What view does Laertes take of Hamlet's relationship with Ophelia?

Answer: When Ophelia appears, Laertes saying she could not persuade him to revenge any more
if she had her wits. Laertes is later informed of her death. She had climbed into a willow tree that
hung over a brook, and when a branch broke, fell into the water. He tells her to fear the love of
Hamlet, and to stay away from fleshly desire.

What view does Polonius take of Hamlet's relationship with Ophelia?

 Describe in 5 points what occurs in this scene.


Answer: Polonius tells Ophelia that the vow of love for Hamlet is untrue and that he should stay
away. He tells her that all the things Hamlet said to her might come from her desire to possess
her and not an honest way. He asks her obedience in staying away from him.

Act 1 - Scene 5

 What does the ghost reveal to Hamlet about his death? Briefly outline the event. What
does he suggest to do with Hamlet's mother?

Answer: The ghost reveals that he is the spirit of the late King, and he was stung by a serpent
who now wears his crown while he was sleeping in his orchard. The ghost reveals to Hamlet that
his brother Claudius, who was in love with the ghost Hamlet’s wife, killed him. While the old
King Hamlet was sleeping in the garden, Claudius poured poison in his ears. The ghost tells
Hamlet to avenge his death by killing Claudius but to leave Hamlet’s mother alone because she
will be punished in hell.
