sickness, and will afflict you with none of the terrible diseases of Egypt which you have known, but will lay them on all those who hate you. – Deuteronomy 7:15” More than six months have passed since we first heard of the coronavirus disease 2019 or what is more commonly referred to as COVID-19 today. Health experts and authorities defined COVID- 19 as an infectious disease caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), a new strain of virus first detected in Wuhan, China in 2019. It is known to target a person’s respiratory system, which will cause the infected patients to exhibit symptoms such as fever, cough, shortness of breath, and in some cases, muscle pain and sore throat. However, all of these are just facts of symptoms which we usually exhibit when we have the flu. Do we now fear having the flu? No, it is not the flu nor the virus which we are afraid of. DEATH. Yes, it is death. People are afraid of dying. With the increasing number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in the world comes the increase in the number of deaths allegedly caused by the virus. We associate the virus with death. But believers, do we have to live in fear? No. In Christ we have the assurance of life. In John 11:25, Jesus said, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live. And whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die.” Our hope rests not in vaccines but in Christ Jesus. It is during this time of pandemic that we have to be steadfast in our faith and become the living testimony of God’s healing and peace.
